Deutsch and magyar

Postby Dagane » Tue May 26, 2020 10:36 am

Tetsik a zene rádión hallni is.

Was ist denn los?

Was soll ich danach tun?

Also, ich will schließlich alltägliche Deutsch für mein ganz normales Leben benutzen.

Sok sikert a magyar tanuláshoz!

Btw if you need any help finding good beginner resources let me know. There is also a fairly active Hungarian discord server, I can PM you a link to it if you're interested. It's good for asking questions and finding others who are learning the same language!

A first post written in a kinda small (and certainly broken) language may not be the best introduction to a log, so I decided to provide some background to the odd reader.

I was born and bred in a monolingual Spanish province and remained gloriously monolingual for 23 years. The system worked hard to ensure I didn't learn any foreign language until the school years were over. Perhaps that's why I like to think my level of Spanish is way above average, albeit my incorrigible Spanglish nags me every so often. Some of my first memories involve me and my mother shopping together, and in one such occassion I earnestly told her I wanted to study English. I was 4. No idea where I got the idea from. So the following year my parents enrolled me in a two year academy course I quite enjoyed. Upon completion English was already mandatory at school, so they removed me from the programme. I was a good student and I faired fairly to very well at school. But if there was a subject I feared, oh boy, it was English. I still see myself sitting at my desk and trying to hide the only big red rounded zero grade I've ever got. And yes, it was English. After that I took private classes and my level improved, but I would still not manage to hold the simplest conversation in English after graduating.

French was offered to 12 year old students. I took it as an opportunity to demonstrate myself I could learn a foreign language and I failed miserably. The teacher seemed to be permanently irritated, the lessons were dull and my classmates couldn't care less about the subject. I could barely utter a dozen words after four years of study and I felt relieved when I could trade in French for something else. Needless to say I am still traumatised and flinch every time I hear the language.

I then trudged through my university degree, oblivious of languages until my senior year. Two things happened. I came across a motivated language learner and a friend of mine took upon herself the duty of teaching me Galician. You see, I studied my degree in Galicia and I used to hear the language everywhere. Some of my classes were taught in Galician and conversations with natives were as follows. First, they would start a conversation in Galician. I would reply in Spanish saying I can't really understand everything they say. They would apologise and switch to Spanish for a few sentences before reverting back to Galician. After five years I would say my passive skills were well tuned. My friend then motivated me to learn the language and use it, she taught me beautiful words and corrected my writing. Then something weird happened. One day, I started a conversation with her in Galician and she replied in Spanish. I asked her whether my Galician was that bad and she said it was brilliant, but it just felt weird I was speaking Galician to her for the first time in six years. We've spoken Spanish ever since, and the same pattern repeated itself with the rest of my Galician friends. Come on, guys! Six years listening to your nonsense and when I make sense out of it, it turns out you all speak my language!

What about the language learner I mentioned before? Well, he mumbled a few languages and inspired me to learn German. I didn't take it very seriously. Our study time usually involved taking gallons of alcohol before smattering random sentences in a local German bar to its German owner. I soon had to work hard on my thesis and forgot most of the vocabulary I had learned, but the experience made me remember that time when I was 4 and I dreamed about speaking English.

So the following autumn, with a diploma in hand, an internship offer and back at my parents', I decided to apply for a Leonardo grant to gain work experience abroad. I dived into English. Seriously. I became obsessed and went from a weak B1 to a solid C2 in two years. At that time I came across old HTAL and started a log there. It proved itself as an endless source of inspiration. Shortly after achieving a C1 level I got a job as an intern in Amsterdam, where I had some of the most illuminating moments of my life, and I received a Leonardo grant for it. The grant had a little surplus for a language course and, despite using English at work, I signed up for an intensive Dutch course that fell a bit short of the A1 level. Let's be honest, I completely messed up German and Dutch and I could speak none.

And then it was the right time for German. I got a job in London, where I still reside. In 2014 I visited a friend in Cologne and spent a couple days travelling on my own around the city. People in Cologne speak English but in the countryside they do not. Guess what! My broken and largely forgotten German was enough to get by, and I felt so proud I decided to learn it properly. I did so on my own and I later joined the Goethe-Institut courses all the way from B1 to C1, the last of which I'm about to finish. In the meantime I babytalked some Czech, because there was a time when I was surrounded my Czechs and I travelled extensively across the Czech Republic. It's such a beautiful country! I also studied a bit of Portuguese because I came across many Brazilians and it just feels so easy a language after Spanish and Galician. All in all, I did not go very far with either of them.

And here I am, studying Hungarian since 5 or 6 weeks ago because my partner is Hungarian. I resisted the call of the language for some time but the temptation ended up being too strong. My first post here was also my first piece of writing in Hungarian. And that's the purpose of this log exactly: keeping myself motivated and practise writing in both German and Hungarian. I will avoid writing in English and Spanish unless I run short of motivation. You may then reprimand me for being too lazy!

Minden hét a barátom nekem a barátoiddal meghívsz.

Hey! Sorry for the late reply.

Here are some resources I'd recommend (not sure if I can't post links or not):

https://discord.gg/xkJvAPg - Hungarian learner discord server. This one is the most active one I've found. Has a lot of resources on there as well as people to help you. Feel free to ask questions there!

When it comes to grammar I used a book called essential grammar by carols rounds. You can probably find a sample by searching for a PDF version online and see what you think. It explains each element of grammar very well with a few examples. Very helpful resource.

You can also find free books by searching for magyar elektronikus könyvtár. It's essentially the Hungarian project Gutenberg. Unfortunately a lot of the books might use older language but you might find some books you like in there.

You can also search for hangoskönyv in YouTube and there are a few playlists that have 300+ audio books - from Hungarian classics to the likes of Harry potter. You could try listening and reading along with the book itself.

Not sure where you live but if you want to buy physical books then check the libri and Alexandria websites. They're both bookstores in Hungary, the websites aren't the best but they have some ebooks and I think they both ship outside of Hungary too (although that might be expensive depending on where you want to ship to).

You could use the website langcorrect to write small entries in Hungarian and people can go in and correct your mistakes.

Lastly you can also get a decent amount of content on netflix now too, but to access it you need to go into profile settings and switch the language to magyar.

Hope you find some of these useful. Let me know if you need any more help or if you have any questions.

Well when I switch settings it's just subs and dubs, but you don't get access to the content from the Hungarian Netflix, which is kind of the thing I want. Because it's not available in my country.
