Catching up with the Weekly political programme, literally "From The Bay" (= Cardiff Bay where the Welsh Assembly / Government is located).

This edition was from just after the elections to the Assembly (as well as to local councils in Wales and England), and the ruling Labour Party had lost its majority, but was the largest single party. Negotiations were continuing to form a government, and at one point, it looked like Leanne Wood, the leader of Plaid Cymru (the Welsh Nationalists) might be First Minister in a coalition (a "Borgen"-type situation!). In the event, Labour held on to the First Minister job (Carwyn Jones continuing). Typically, this final agreement was virtually ignored by the English media, with even the Guardian (who should know better) relegating it to half a column on page 9. If this had been Scotland, it would have been on page 1. Perhaps Wales should have a referendum...

BTW, Leanne Wood was an SSiW learner, and has even been on a "Bootcamp".

(There is a reason why two programmes from the same series are apparently of quite different lengths. It is to do with the way the programmes are stored on iPlayer. In the past, more often than not there would be a minute or two on either side of the actual programme. These days they seem a bit more precise about their editing, but in this case, evidently not. It's quite handy actually as you get a bit of news quite often at one end and maybe a trailer for another programme at the other. It adds variety, and it's all Welsh, so I "count" it).

Montmorency,

Have you tried Duolingo Welsh? What's your opinion of it?

No, sorry. There is something that puts me off trying anything like Duolingo, or Memrise. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I don't plan to try it.

I've been quite happy with SSiW (which is still being developed, and by people whom I have personally got to know over the years) as an actual learning mechanism, supplemented from time to time by books by Gareth King (who occasionally pops up on the SSiW forum ... he's very learner-friendly).

I feel I'm really in the stage of mainly vocabulary-building by means of high-ish levels of native material, audio and hopefully reading, but I seem to have been neglecting reading a bit of late. (Something I'm definitely going to get back to though).

I think some people on the SSiW forum have spoken well of the Dulingo course, and also of Memrise. I'm sure it/they suit(s) some people, but I just think it's not for me.

Much more up my street.

When I got back home, my parcel of books from @Alexraasch had arrived. Many thanks again Alex!!!

Despite being in the middle of another German book, I decided to plunge into one of Alex's, and got on quite well with it. More later.

Finished reading:

"Anmerkung zu Hitler" von Sebastian Haffner, 1978, Kindler Verlag. I estimated it at about 47,500 words, or about 155 pages at 300 wpp.
(rounded down slightly).

Also finally finished "Der Geteilte Himmel" von Christa Wolf, DTV, 35th edition 2001 (first published 1963).
I estimated it as 68,500 words or about 225 pages at 300 wpp
(rounded down slightly).

I didn't use a dictionary for either of the above, or use the translation that I have of "Der Geteilte Himmel" (although I had read the translation beforehand). I will probably go over both of them and look up at least a selection of words.

I have one more, or possibly two, other books by Wolf that I want to read. It's a pity that they are a bit downbeat. :)

About Young Farmer's Clubs in Wales. I had never given them much thought, but they sound like a worthwhile institution. I should imagine that the life of a farmer in Wales, especially in the remote places that Wales is rich in, can be pretty lonely, so this fulfils a real need in a creative way.

Not Quite French

Watched (mainly because our daughter was here and she has been following it) the last 2 episodes of "The Disappearance" on BBC4 TV.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b05rcz9v
I hadn't watched it, because the beginning seemed too dark for me, but I can see now that it was a fine series. Some resonances with "The Killing".

French? Oui, French. I used to have a real love affair with French. I never actually fell out of love with it, but it got displaced by German, and I didn't have the capacity to proceed with both languages to a higher level at the same time, and German won out. I can still "get by" in French, but I will never be great in it. I'd like to get back into watching more French movies though.
