Re: Xmmm's Russian log

Postby Xmmm » Fri Feb 03, 2017 1:37 am

Picking up two new languages this year may have been a mistake. :)

I realize now (and of course I knew this) that with 700+ hours under my belt for Russian and roughly B1 skills, I was only about 18 months away from reaching my desired level in the language -- assuming I could keep studying two hours a day. So that would have been the smart thing to do.

Picking up Italian was not such a bad idea, since my knowledge of some Spanish (maybe A2 passive level) gets me a small discount ... but picking up Turkish was a step too far. And my plan to limit myself to just Turkish Duolingo is failing as I've found a great Turkish TV show and the language itself is an interesting challenge.

So ... I'm trying to find time in my schedule. I really don't have three hours or four hours a day ... if I keep studying the way I was studying, where I'm seated and focusing on reading, with listening as an afterthought. I'm going to have to switch it around and emphasize listening.

I'm watching Interns again after a one year break. I'm on episode 36.

I haven't found any terrific Italian resources yet. The one TV show I can access, Un Passo dal Cielo, is mediocre.

I'm more interested in Turkish than I thought I'd be. I really liked episode 13 of Vatanim Sensin. Time go to back to episode 1 and watch the whole series.

I think 1 hour a day of Russian is good enough. Also, 20 minutes with Italian would do. Unless you're watching something in either language that takes more than this time.

I like to keep short sessions for intensive reading or explicit studying because the odds are higher that I can stick them in some moments of break. When it comes to watching TV series, I only start them at the end of the day when there is at least twice as much time available as of the time I want to watch. With shorter activities that's less of a problem, because if I'm going to read a text intensively and it only takes me 5 minutes to do so, I have more of a margin to work with.

Summary: modest progress

Русский

I watched some more episodes of Interns (up through #39).

I have nine skills left in Duolingo.

I'm struggling to do Glossika because it is so boring.

: 21 / 100 Glossika GSR 1
: 15 / 25 Duolingo Level
: 3 / 100 Learning Russian RT

Italiano

Italian is turning into the "middle chilld" of my languages.

For Russian, I have Interns which is a hilarious sitcom (at least the first season is). For Turkish, I have Vatanim Sensin which is a gripping historical drama. For Italian all I've been able to find is Un Passo dal Cielo, which is a comedy-drama which reminds me of U.S. shows from the 1980s like Quincy. I don't mean that in a complimentary way. I think the comedy-drama format is fatally flawed which is why it has gone out of style most places. The comedy is not that funny since it's compromised by the drama and vice versa.

I only have so much time for TV so I keep skippiing Italian.

I guess I will plug along with LingQ for now and maybe next year I will buy some complete series on DVD that has Italian dubbing.

Vatanim Sensin is an awesome show. I went back and watched the first hour of episode one. The Miralai (sp?) character is shown to be some old friend of the hero ... an old friend who spends a lot of time looking at the hero's wife when nobody is noticing. There's also a shocking, off-the-wall type of event in the second half hour that has the whole family fleeing the village on short notice.

I had fun recognizing a few new words, too. "Kizlerim" and "Tamam".

Summary: More modest progress. Turkish has really moved into the #2 spot over Italian just because I have great Turkish TV to watch.

Русский

I watched some more episodes of Interns (up through #45).

I have seven skills left in Duolingo.

I'm giving up on Glossika again. Maybe sometime in the future but I'm overbooked at the moment and it's the least interesting activity.

: 15 / 25 Duolingo Level
: 3 / 100 Learning Russian RT

Italiano

I gave up on free Italian resources and bought a couple of episodes of Inspector Montalbano at Amazon video. It's not the greatest show ever, but it's a step up from what I was watching before.

Türkçe

I'm absolutely loving Vatanim Sensin. I've watched episodes 1,2, and 13 in their entirety plus a bit of 14 ... almost seven hours in total. Never a dull moment, and the acting is great ... not a weak actor in the bunch.

There are some aspects of the story I don't understand. For example, the hero (Cevdet) spent seven years in a Greek POW camp, where he seemed to have been a hero, role model, and natural leader to the other prisoners. However, it looks like he got out of the camp by betraying those other prisoners and taking up a job working for the Greeks. There must be some mitigating circumstances, but I would have to understand Turkish to know what they are.

I really enjoy Onur Saylak's protrayal of Lieutenant Teyfik, though. He's the ultimate villain ... because, he is so real. Very three dimensional.

I found a new Russian show, Ленинград 46. It's pretty good. It definitely owes a debt to Место встречи изменить нельзя, but it seems like in showbiz you're allowed to recycle ideas when they get old enough.

I'm frustrated a bit by lack of automacity in my Russian. I don't want to go back to speaking bad Russian on Italki, so I'm trying to restart Glossika and push through.

For Turkish, I've downloaded FSI. Where I will find the time I honestly don't know. I've been so busy self-sabotaging by adding new languages. But it's at my fingertips if I need it.

I'll track progress in some courses in the hope I'll finish them. Hope springs eternal.

Say Something in Welsh really is the best of the best of the best. It really is "Michel Thomas on steroids."

Still trying to think how I could make personal editions of SSiTurkish or SSiRussian without shelling out thousands of dollars. :)

Русский

I finished all 32 episodes of Ленинград 46. I was sorry to see the end. Great show.

I started однажды в одессе trying to strike gold a second time, but I find the main character very off-putting. It's like watching an American mafia movie where Ryan Seacrest is the rising star of the underworld. I may go back to it or may not.

Then I found Нулевая Мировая (documentary about the Crimean War with Russian subtitles) and "Hunting the Gauleiter." They are not outstanding but are watchable.

Italiano

I'm reading Pinocchio and Il Linguista.

Türkçe

Watched all two hours of episode #4 of Vatanim Sensin. This show is terrific.

As much as I like to track my statistics, I've decided the only one worth tracking publicly is "hours to S3."

I've used Kanewai's hours estimates from his immortal blog post. Based on the Russian hours I've put in so far I should be at S1+/S2 and that sounds about right, so so far so good.

For Russian, the count is a little approximate, but I think it's correct within +- 50 hours. Looking back, a significant portion of my studying was suboptimal (silent reading). Won't do that anymore!

I'm really going to focus on Russian again and try to pound it out within the next fifteen months or so. The other languages will get 15 minutes a day each -- after I've done two hours in Russian.

The only coursework I'll be doing is listed below. The rest will be reading/listening at LingQ, watching TV ... and towards the end when I'm really hitting S3, I guess I'll put in 50 or 100 Italki hours.
