интерну is pretty high quality video ... and no laugh track, thank God.

Аха...ты имеешь в виду "Интерны" и "Кухня," может быть? "Интерну" или "Кухна" я нигде не вижу. Кстати, Интерны также является на "rutube.ru" (так скажет Google).

I picked Russian because of the wealth of native materials. This weekend, for example, I'm debating whether to watch more интерну (or Интерны as some like to spell it), or maybe the Russian Winnie the Pooh (винни пух), or maybe a film by Eisenstein, or maybe a classic Soviet film. It really won't make a difference as my comprehension in any case will be around 2%, lol.

But I'm wondering how people learning "small" languages maintain the interest over time. If there are no great novels in the target language, no great cinema in the target language, and you don't have a significant other in the target language ... do you just read the paper and Harry Potter?

That's not a put down of learning more obscure languages ... I'm just curious how interest is maintained over time if there's nothing inherently interesting in the native materials.

I'm studying Russian too but I don't derive my motivation from native materials, so I guess the question of whether there are great novels or films isn't so important for everybody. For example I really enjoy speaking with my tutor and have no real interest in the greats of Russian culture. For someone else just the intellectual curiosity of studying an obscure language might give them their "kick". And of course no-one is restricted to one source of motivation either. Certainly there is a certain amount of convenience when studying "popular" languages, especially in regards to finding textbooks and graded readers etc, but again that's not the same thing as maintaining interest. Also I can't imagine there are many languages that don't have some awesome materials of one kind or another.

This weekend I watched человек амфибия ...
chelovek_amfibiya.jpg

It's a Soviet science fiction romance from the 1960s. It was a bit of a weird experience. On the one hand the plot is clearly "crummy science fiction B movie from the 50s/60s". On the other hand, there are some interesting artistic flourishes you wouldn't normally see in such a film. And the guy who plays Icthyander gives him a lot of depth. And there's a weird segment with what are supposed to be Argentinian gypsies (?). And Anastasiya Vertinskaya is pretty captivating despite having a weak part.

So ... a qualified thumbs up from me. The first 20 minutes of the film is actually the worst 20 minutes of the film, bear that in mind.

I also got ahold of the интерны transcripts from polydog.org and so rewatched episode one following along with the transcript after having read through the transcript once beforehand.

I'm also trying to standardize my progress bars. Everything that is an actual course (assimil, duolingo, glossika, memrise) I've left as is. When I complete them, they will drop off. After that I only have hours, 10000 pages, and 10000 minutes

Overall

I think I've made a tactical error in pursuing so many courses (memrise, duo, assimil, glossika) at the same time. So even though I've downloaded cortina russian and am thinking of downloading Russian FAST, I'll hold off.

Мы

I deciphered the first 14 chapters of Мы pretty easily, just with LingQ's built in word-by-word lookup. However, I hit a wall starting with chapter 15. There's a shift that takes place. It changes from a sort of travelogue of the future by a rational narrator into an "am I dreaming, am I sick, am I dead, am I awake" sort of thing. Lots of green fog and glass and splintered sunlight on cabinet mirror-doors and scary invisible curves that contain the square root of -1. Completely lost. So I broke down and started reading each chapter in English before going to Russian. Currently on chapter 23.
