Emme’s Small Steps

Postby Emme » Mon Aug 31, 2015 1:33 pm

Hi everybody!

I’ve been AWOL for some time, mainly because RL means I’ve little time for languages and the forum this year, but also because I was trying to see how the whole HTLAL-domain-expiration debacle and community-in-exile thing would work out. By nature I prefer to sit on the fence for a while and watch before jumping into something new, but now it looks like the community has found a new home on this forum, so I guess that if all the people are here, it’s mainly on these boards that I too will continue to post.

I think the time has come for me to at least drop by and say hi to all the old friends and the new one I’ll meet here.

I find HTLAL’s likely demise (or rather its progressive decay) quite sad, but for me the most important part of that forum was the community that I got to know and love there and I’m happy to see that the lion’s share of that community has quickly gathered here and that there’s quite a lot going on in this neck of the woods.

I’m still trying to catch up with all that has happened, but that may take a while. Meanwhile, here’s to a bright future for our community, wherever we may gather!

Those of you who already know me are aware (and those who don’t will soon find out) that this year I’m mainly occupied with the SuperChallege. Apart from using the bot to keep track of my progress, every four months I used to list everything I had read and watched for the challenge in my old log.

As today marks the end of another four-month term, I’m doing an update. This list will be cross-posted in the old log as well, so that this post will work as a juncture to connect the two logs.

Thanks, Expugnator!

Let’s hope the final part of the year is a little less hectic and I can go back to doing what I like, i.e. spending some quality time learning languages.

I’ve seen in your log that you’re still going strong: hats off to you for your consistency and stamina!

Final Super Challenge Update

As you might have noticed, I’ve basically disappeared from the forum and the community for the past few months, but I’ve kept updating my log for the Super Challenge to the very last day.

Now that 2015 is over it’s clear that for me it was all about the English Super Challenge: I had no time for any serious language learning outside of the challenge. Moreover I gave up on the German part ages ago even though I’ve kept listening to at least one radio drama every week out of principle.

As for the English part of the challenge, I’m rather satisfied with the results: the numbers are pretty impressive, if I may say so myself. The film part of the challenge was quite easy to handle and it fit in with my lifestyle pretty smoothly. The reading part was harder: in the last week or so I had to rush to finish the huge chunkster I began back in August 2014. Had I been more consistent especially earlier this year, I could probably have managed to read even more with less final haste. Honestly, I would have preferred to finish 100 physical books as per the very first rules of the original challenge, but I made the mistake of reading too many longish or long books rather than concentrating on shorter reads. It is as it is now.

Overall it was a positive if a little crazy experience, but were I to do it again, I suppose it would be wiser to choose only one language from the start.

I wish everyone a great 2016!

PS. I didn’t like the odd number of book units (414.9) I had ended up with in the English challenge, so while waiting to go out for the night, I’ve read Adichie’s extremely short book (just an essay really) and reached a more pleasing 415+.

A few final words on the Super Challenge.

This post turned out too long for The Super Challenge - discussion thread, so I’ll put it here instead.

The Super Challenge was fun, I think. At least I enjoyed it for the most part, even though it felt pretty exhausting at times.

That’s probably my fault, in that I dedicated practically all of my leisure time to the challenge, to the detriment of practically everything else language-wise. If I were to do it again, it would probably be wiser to sign up with only one language (not that I always do what I know to be wiser), which is plenty for me. I tend to become rather obsessive and to concentrate on just one thing at a time: that’s why I dropped the reading part in German pretty soon. Luckily, I found the existence of the bot spurring enough to make me dedicate about an hour a week to listening/watching German, which I guess is something positive.

It’s very difficult to judge objectively what effect this huge input of native media has had on my English level, mainly because when you’re advanced any progress is so hard to gauge and it happens so incredibly slowly. Sure, you get to read or hear a fair amount of new vocabulary but I really doubt that I managed to internalize more than a few dozen “new” words in the past 20 months: if you want to really increase your vocabulary, intensive studying is probably a more productive way to spend your time. But I don’t discount the positive effects this level of input may have had on “fixing” half-leaned words and making them actually accessible when you need them.

It may seem absurd, but I have the feeling that overall I benefited more from the “lighter” half of the challenge i.e. the film part rather than the “difficult” part i.e. books. Reading in whatever language is more demanding than watching and so after a day’s work it’s easier to sit in front of the TV than to curl up with a book. And yet, I find that watching was probably more productive in terms of improving one aspect of my English: i.e. my listening comprehension of a wide variety of registers and accents. When you read, you’ve got all the time in the world to make sure you understand. At C1-C2 level it’s quite improbable you’ll find a passage where your comprehension is less than adequate: at most you’ll encounter one or two words that you don’t know, but at this point in your studies you’re already fairly good at deducing the meaning of a new word from context. As you can imagine, that’s not very challenging. But if you choose your watching materials with an eye for variety, things can get challenging pretty soon. Standard British English or Standard American English are easy enough to understand, but luckily no actor worth their salt speaks in standard English all the time in films or TV-series. And in general I truly believe that on average language learners have not nearly enough exposure to aural input (though I wonder if that is true also for those growing up in countries where the absence of dubbing is the norm, like in Scandinavia).

Ok, I’m rambling. I’d better stop.

I’m not sure whether I will join the Super Challenge again in May but in the meantime I want to get my hands on some Italian novels, which I haven’t touched for almost two years now since they didn’t count and I couldn’t log them: I've had Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels gathering dust on my shelf for months. I can hardly wait!
