Re: Tea with Tarvos - Linguavaganza! 2020s log
I've had the weirdest week. It started absolutely awful, and ended on a really high note: I had an exam today (interpreting, midterm), and my teacher was positive, so I assume that means I've passed. She was beaming.
I've also had other good news on the personal front, so I've got a little bit of a reason to be happy at least. Well-deserved.

Personal reasons are forcing me to spend more time with Finnish next to Spanish. I am not complaining Finnish is fun! It's a nightmare to remember all the words and the spelling drives me crazy like Beyoncé, but it's working out so far. I think.

Re: Tea with Tarvos - Linguavaganza! 2020s log
There's a midterm break here, so I have time for escapades right now. Or well, what passes for escapades in these parts. There's also other stuff going on behind the scenes, but those of you in the know have already figured that out.
I was focusing on Spanish for the exam, but I'm bored of it now, so I'm spending time with Icelandic and Finnish. The Finnish is much more useful on a practical level - I'm planning to travel to Finland in the spring. Apart from other reasons It's nice to be able to focus on languages again, especially ones that I haven't inundated myself with over the years. With Finnish I'm really not up to much though - it's such a different language that I really have to work to remember all the weird grammar things going on there.
I watched an Icelandic TV series called Trapped and finished the first season. It was pretty good. Icelandic is nice and relaxing and it's a language I definitely needed more exposure to.
I'm going back to finishing Vis a Vis now, which is in Spanish, however.
And I also watched five episodes of Al-Hayba a while back, but that's in Arabic, mostly Levantine (Lebanese and Syrian).

I loved the first season of Trapped! Let me know if the second season is good!

Re: Tea with Tarvos - Linguavaganza! 2020s log
I've finished Vis a Vis, and have continued with Trapped - two episodes of Icelandic.
But today I focused on other languages, mainly Portuguese, which I wrote a lot of, and I watched a movie in Polish about the Art of Love, a biographical movie about Michalina Wislocka, a Polish gynaecologist and sexologist who tried to get her revolutionary book (for the time - we are talking communist Poland) about sex published, but she couldn't get it past the censors and the church for a long time. Eventually she managed to get it published, and she was recognized by the Polish government in the 90s.
It's thanks to brave women like her that we have the rights we have these days. The movie has some very explicit sex scenes, so I don't recommend watching it when your young kids are bustling about in the background (If they're a little older then it might actually be a good movie to show for educational purposes...) Her ideas about the female orgasm and the use of anticonception were revolutionary back in the day, and I think a lot of Polish women are very thankful for her contribution to society.
Oh, and part of the movie shows an open marriage. There's that, too.

Are there successful open marriages? It's hard for me to imagine. Humans are such jealous creatures.

There are - my poly friends are happy like that. Jealousy is all about how you manage it!
This one was not, though... though it was an open arrangement in the 40s/50s...

Re: Tea with Tarvos - Linguavaganza! 2020s log
