Re: Lingua's 2020 Italian, German, Portuguese Log (+ dabbling in Latin, Sicilian & dialects)

German:
Clozemaster: New: 420 & Reviewed: 892 (multiple choice)
Duolingo: 60 --> 61 crowns; subjects: predicative; places
Memrise: Review verb conjugations & vocabulary
Reading: Café in Berlin by André Klein
MHz Choice: Watched: Tatort: Lindholm S1E3 (88 mins)
MHz Choice: Watched: Tatort: Borowski S2E3 (88 mins)

This weeks Lindholm episode was much more to my liking as it focused more on the crime. Borowski remains my favorite Tatort so far.

Duolingo: 72 --> 75 crowns; subjects: comparison, adjectives, abstract objects, adverbs
Portuguese Lab: Lesson 15-17
MHz Choice: Filha da Lei S1E2 (84 mins)
Reading: Cozinha do Rio

Portuguese Lab: Lesson 15 covered saying the time which was relatively easy. Lesson 16 covered when events take place which included days of the week and such. Lesson 17 covered reflexive verbs. When I learned Italian I relearned a lot of English grammar at the same time which I'm finding makes understanding grammar concepts in Portuguese much easier than when I first started learning Italian.

I decided to switch 100% to text input for Portuguese on Clozemaster. That slows me down some so I end up doing fewer sentences per session but I feel like this will help me with spelling. This week I realized that many Italian words that end in -zione end in -ção in Portuguese. These are the types of patterns that can increase ones vocabulary without much work. Unfortunately, I also found some errors in Clozemaster where the Italian would specify a word but the Portuguese word would end up being incorrect. For example, the Italian sentence used ragazza (girl) but the Portuguese used mulher (woman). With multiple choice one could guess but with text input one instead became irritated. :x

I watched the second episode of Filha da Lei. This one was slightly shorter at only 42 minutes. I again watched it twice. I am getting used to the way the primary characters speak. I felt like I could distinguish words better even if I didn't know the meaning. Last week I felt like the words ran together a lot more with the shhh, tshhh, zhsss sounds. In particular I find the ex-husband of the inspector who is a journalist easier to understand than other characters. He gets a bit emotional when he speaks and enunciates his words so they are more obvious.

I've slowed down a bit the last few days and didn't do any PTLab lessons. PTLab has a skill builder section with real dialogs, scripted dialogs, short stories, focused stories, articles, CAPLE exams and podcasts. Most are at A2-B2 level so not many for A1 but I did listen to one of the short stories called um libro novo which was easy to understand. I wasn't familiar with CAPLE exams but it seems that they are practice exams and include CIPLE-A2, DEPLE-B1 and DIPLE-B2. When I finish all forty A1-A2 lessons I'll take them since the site owner will correct them.

I didn't feel like watching Filha da Lei a second time yesterday but may do so later in the weekend. Since the 6WC completed yesterday I will be doing more German and less Portuguese now but still plan to do a couple of PT Lab lessons each week. I had hoped to get through the first 20 Lessons during the challenge but only managed 17. So now the goal is to get through Lesson 20 by the end of March which is doable.

I had my normal weekly italki lesson and also chatted with a friend in Italy for about an hour. With their lock down they find themselves with a lot of free time at the moment. Unfortunately, if the US ever follows suit I will be stuck working at home since I'm set up for that.

Book #89: Piatti unici di verdure AA.VV. This book had four sections which included soups, baked dishes, salads and pastry type dishes. Sadly, it seems that the last section had some of the same recipes as what is in the other book in the series that I'm reading. I bought these because they were relatively cheap. When reading cookbooks I rarely look up words but I did learn a few new terms related to pastries. A lot of the recipes didn't seem very appealing to me. Some of the salads did sound good.

Because of all the virus news I feel compelled to read in recent days I've only been getting in 30-40 minutes a day of German excluding Tatort. If it weren't for the 366 day challenge I probably wouldn't have even done this much. I continue to be disappointed in the PMP Basic Grammar book for German. Chapter 3 introduces noun cases. I don't think introducing me to all four noun cases immediately is so useful. How will I remember it all? I can barely remember the gender of many of the nouns. Chapter 4 covers gender and definite articles.

I talked to my Italian friend again for about an hour completely in Italian and have had two italk lessons since my last update. I've only been reading about 10-15 minutes a day so not making much progress. I listened to a short interview on La Stampa regarding the virus. I also listened to some DiWineTaste podcasts because MHz Choice was having streaming problems early in the weekend. I work from home a lot of the time and started doing it full time a couple of weeks ago. In the past slowness was never a problem but in these days with so many people working from home or home all day because they're not working at all the internet seems slow and sometimes unresponsive throughout the day. I may just end up watching some of my Italian DVDs next weekend and try to use MHz Choice in the daytime only.

So in the last 9 days I did quite a bit less than I typically do in 4-5 days. This can't continue. :(

Book #90: Mendel e l'invasione degli OGM by Luca Novelli. I didn't actually know anything about Mendel but he did studies of pea plants and came up with some rules of genetics/heredity. I ended up feeling bad for him because his published studies were more or less ignored until some years later when it was found by others in the same field and expanded upon. This was the standard format of bio plus dictionary on genetic terms.

The Italian publisher Sellerio has made a free mini-book available in pdf or epub format. It's written by Antonio Manzini, the author of the Rocco Schiavone series. Title: L’amore ai tempi del Covid-19. I downloaded it but haven't yet read it and probably won't until the start of the next SC. It does require registration. Book #91: Volta e l'anima dei robot by Luca Novelli. this was about Alessandro Volta who is another person I knew very little about. He invented the first battery (pila) and discovered methane and the difference in electric potential. Oviously volt was named after him. This book was similar to most of the series in that there was the first person bio and the dictionary of terms related to electricity.

I was more interested in Tatort this past week than anything else. I watched five different episodes. I continue to be surprised at how much I can understand even at this level when my vocabulary is limited. I must be absorbing the language of the police procedural. I was happy to see MHz Choice has acquired the Season 2 episodes of Die Toten vom Bodensee (Murder by the Lake). There are only three episodes and the first will be available at the end of the month. I worked on verbs quite a bit this week redoing some of the exercises in Chapter 1 of the PMP Verb Tense book.

After reading the PT Lab article I then found a FAQ put out by Public Health and read through it. I obviously didn't know all the words but got the gist. While I still only understood a portion of Filha da Lei I was able to distinguish individual words much easier than when I watched the first episode.

Only six more skills to go and I'll be completely done. I've taken a look at the two PMP Latin books I have (Basic Latin and Latin Verb Tenses) and will probably start using those after I've completed Duo.

Italian:

Reading: Torte salate e sformati di verdure AA.VV. <-- 56%

I recorded reading the last of the Volta book by Novelli. Outside of that I watched two episodes of Montalbano and had my normal weekly tutor session.

All in all most of my studying for all of my languages (outside of Latin) was with MHz Choice this week. I felt the need to escape from all the bad news regarding the virus. Plus now that most everything is closed there is nowhere to go on the weekends so I've more free time. I'll attempt to find something regarding covid-19 in German & Italian this week.

I finished up Chapter 1 of the PMP German Verb Tenses book. This chapter covered conjugation of regular verbs plus some variations for specific endings. Pretty straight forward. I couldn't get into Tatort this week so I tried out the first episode of Kommissar Rex. It is OK though a bit sad because Rex (the dog) lost his original handler and then wouldn't eat or drink water. He was adopted by the primary character of the show though I have to admit I didn't catch his name. I tried to watch the second episode but it was too dark so it will need to wait until I'm in a better frame of mind.

I've done hardly anything outside of finishing one book.

Book #92 Archimede e le sue macchine da guerra by Luca Novelli. Another person I've heard of but knew little about. The war machines were things like catapults and gears to hit the enemy. Outside of that he was a mathematician, physicist, etc. The vocabulary in this one was a little bit harder then some of the others in the series.
