Portuguese:
-Reading: Cozinha prática by Rita Lobo (43%)
-Grammar: Manuale di conversazione per chi viaggia - portoghese by AA.VV. (63%)
-youtube: Tuga na Cozinha: 7 videos (96 mins)
-PTLab: Consolidate Portuguese – A2
-italki: one 30 minute lesson, one 60 minute lesson
-wrote: 370 words

For PTLab I learned about the condicional presente (conditional), conjugação pronominal (pronominal conjugation) and presente do conjuntivo (present subjunctive). The latter is a long lesson on the details of usage so I've only learned the conjugation so far. There are individual modules for all the ways it's used. I'm only getting an overview of all of these conjugations and haven't even begun to remember them all. But eventually I'll get to that.

I had another 30 minute trial lesson with one italki teacher and an hour with the one I trialed last week. With both I'm reviewing the basics and making sure my pronunciation is good. It seems that it is better than I thought so that's encouraging. Part of one lesson was going over numbers and I did quite well on them thanks to Italian. The numbers aren't precisely the same but they are pretty close which is helpful.

Book #6: O vinho que Lisboa tem by Ana Cristina Marques. This book was a bit of a disappointment for me as I was expecting it to be about wine but instead it was about the quintas (farms), wine bars and garrafeiras (wine cellars). I'm not sure why the word quintas is used because based on most of the descriptions they were vineyards (vinhas) with one or more building structures and of course grapes though some had grapes elsewhere or in multiple places. Sometimes there was food available or even a hotel. Instead of discussing the actual wine the author talked about how many different labels the wine bars and garrafeiras carried or some historical significance regarding the quintas. Because of this there wasn't a lot of vocabulary repetition which is something I count on when reading non-fiction. I finally got used to what I considered an almost pretentious writing style about half way through.

Quite a few of the wine bars have English names and also they were sometimes owned by ex-pats ... mostly European. The book itself is a nice reference for the wine bars in Lisbon. I can see using it for names of places to check out the next time I go to Portugal.

Italian:
-Reading/Recording: Il dizionario del pasticcere – Tutto, dalla A all Z (30%)
-Recorded: 48 mins
-italki: one 64 minute session

Portuguese:
-Reading: Cozinha prática by Rita Lobo (43%)
-youtube: Tuga na Cozinha: 8 videos (90 mins)
-youtube: Cozinha comigo: 4 videos (96 mins)
-podcast: Learn European Portuguese Online: 9 episodes (31 mins)
-memrise: review words
-record: 11 mins

I mostly watched videos and read. I've watched all of the Tuga na Cozinha videos except of the ones less than 10 mins so I found someone new who I like though he has a different accent he speaks rather slowly and I'm able to follow him more easily. I've created manual flash cards using index cards for some Portuguese words and spent a short time going through them. I'm looking for things to do the last hour of the day as I'm trying to avoid screen time to see if it helps with sleep quality. That means reading a physical book and possibly non-digital flash cards. Not too sure what else I might come up with. I also recorded Portuguese for the first time reading some of the sentences from my italki sessions since I was confident my pronunciation was decent. I've avoided recording Portuguese because I don't want do it with bad pronunciation.

I completed Manuale di conversazione per chi viaggia - portoghese by AA.VV. This book is OK and could be useful for increasing vocabulary but as far as reading material it got pretty tedious at the end. There are 10 chapters on 10 different subjects and then vocabulary lists within subcategories along with example sentences and a Portuguese pronunciation guide. I only looked up the Portuguese words if I didn't know the Italian word. The subcategories were often pretty detailed so I didn't always know every single word within them. My biggest dig is there was no gender information included in the word lists so it gets a negative for that.

manuale.jpg

I've completed the 6WC with a total of 120h13m for Portuguese which was 64.09% of the total so I met my goal of at least 50% Portuguese. The rest was 22.83% Italian, 10.91% German and 2.18% Piedmontese. I am happy with all that I did for Portuguese but now I need to spend some time with German and French.

In all these recipe books, have you come across any good shrimp recipes?

I'm sure there are. Shrimp were included in many of the recipes in Cozinha do Rio though often with other seafood also included. Vinhos & Petiscos had a recipe with shrimp and mushrooms in a broth that sounded good. As much as I read all these cookbooks it's rare that I actually make anything from them.

Italian:
-Podcast: Mangi come parli (129 mins)
-Reading/Recording: Il dizionario del pasticcere – Tutto, dalla A alla Z (36%)
-Recorded: 34 mins

Three episodes of Mangi come parli. Subjects were I maestri della cucina, Menù a quattro mani & Menù di pasqua.

Piedmontese:
-Grammar: Il piemontese in tasca by Assimil (50%)

I did two conversations in the Assimil book. The subjects were il clima and la casa. These were both rather short but covered things like wind, rain, etc and the rooms of a house. All very straight forward. Often the Piedmontese words are similar to Italian but in the case of the house many were different.

Portuguese:
-Reading: Cozinha prática by Rita Lobo (55%)
-PTLab: Breakthrough – Module 1 (B1)

For PTLab I did a couple of short lessons that covered situations where you use the subjunctive. Outside of that I did quite a bit of reading of the cookbook. I would like to finish it within the week and probably won't add any new books until next week.

Italian:
-Podcast: Mangi come parli (95 mins)
-Podcast: Due di denari (105 mins(
-Reading/Recording: Il dizionario del pasticcere – Tutto, dalla A alla Z (41%)
-Recorded: 28 mins

Decided it was time to try another Radio 24 podcast. I listened to two episdoes of Due di denari which was on personal finance. This seems to be a relatively new series as the episodes only go back to December. Topics were consigli di lettura and conti correnti. The first one was about personal finance and mentioned a book by Dave Ramsey. Don't much care for him myself. The other one discussed the issues of people who lost their jobs (or worked very little) during the pandemic and the problems they might have with the bank if they were in arrears. There was a term they used but I've now forgotten it. This one wasn't as easy as Mangi come parli but I was still able to follow most of it. Subjects for Mangi come parli were cotture alla griglia and gli asparagi. I was pretty sure there was one on asparagus a few episodes back and verified there was. It doesn't matter that much because the episodes are only partially on whatever the subject is.

Portuguese:
-Reading: Cozinha prática by Rita Lobo (59%)
-italki: two one-hour sessions

I made the mistake of booking two consecutive hour sessions today with no break but it wasn't too bad. Overall I like all three of the teachers I tried out so plan to work with all of them for the next couple of months at least. Outside of that I read more and didn't bother with PTLab today as it seemed unnecessary.

German:
-Reading: Kochen und backen mit der Maus published by ZS Verlog (10%)

I'm back to reading the cookbook and went through the recipe for Wiener Schnitzelchen. I seem to have remembered most of the food words that I learned recently but the cooking related verbs less so. Which seems backwards since the verbs have more repetitiveness. I'll be making physical flash cards for the frequently used verbs to see if that will help me to remember them better.

Italian:
-Podcast: La bufala in tavola (88 mins)
-Podcast: Due di denari (102 mins)

I listened to two more episodes of Due di denari which covered il 2020 dei consumi and Erasmus, tra covid e Brexit. I decided to go back to La bufala in tavola to see if I would still find the host annoying after not listening for a while. I do. Not sure if I'll return to it or not. I probably will since I mostly like the show itself. It's just so rude the way she interrupts her guests. Worse she rambles on but doesn't actually say anything of interest.

Piedmontese:
-Grammar: Il piemontese in tasca by Assimil (50%)

I did one more conversation in the Assimil book. The subject was shopping. There was a lot of vocabulary divided into groupings such as the vegetable market, butcher, bakery, etc. Easy enough.

Portuguese:
-Memrise
-Reading: Cozinha prática by Rita Lobo (64%)
-italki: one one-hour sessions

Not much to say about Portuguese. A little Memrise, reading and another session with an italki teacher. We continued to review the basics mostly in a question and answer format. I feel like all of these sessions are helping me.

I've also decided that I'm only going to focus on recording/writing output challenge for Italian and Portuguese so I've dropped the bars for French and German.

French:
-MHz Choice: Georges Simenon Mysteries S1E1-4 (375 mins)

I watched four episodes of Georges Simenon mysteries. They are all stand alone and I rather like them. They are based on books by Georges Simenon who I was not familiar with but evidently he's written several 100 books and many have been translated into other languages. The primary character generally solves the crime but the crime may not be a legal one but more of a moral one.

German:
-MHz Choice: Flemming S2E1-8 (348 mins)

I binge watched season 2 of Flemming over the weekend. I think the first season was better but it's still OK.

Italian:
-Podcast: (128 mins)
-Reading/Recording: Il dizionario del pasticcere – Tutto, dalla A alla Z (50%)
-Recorded: 56 mins
-italki: 70 minute session

I listened to three episodes of Mangia come parli . Subjects were aglio e cipolla, le alghe & la frittura.

Portuguese:
-italki: one one-hour session

Book #7: I've completed Cozinha prática by Rita Lobo. This is the type of cookbook that I like where the recipes are only a small part of the book and it instead focuses on related information instead. This book has 13 chapters covering either a food or sub-category of food such as rice, herbs, chocolate or fish. Each chapter discussed the techniques to use in cooking that particular food, a way to save money or time which usually involved making enough to freeze for later. Sometimes she'd focus on some useful utensil such as a rolling pin for breads. For the most part I didn't find this too difficult though I had to get used to different words for things like parsley and pepper. Generally I could figure out things by context.

conzinhapratica.jpg

Outside of that I seem to have taken an unplanned break from PTLab and grammar but should resume soon. PTLab has a book club for subscribers so I've decided to read the latest book that started yesterday even though I'm a little skeptical that I'll like it. But it might be useful since we can ask questions if we have doubts about something in the book.

French:
-MHz Choice: Georges Simenon Mysteries S1E5-6 179 mins)

I watched the final two episodes of Georges Simenon mysteries. I didn't think these were as good as the first three but still OK.

German:
-MHz Choice: Flemming S3E1-8 (346 mins)

I binge watched the final season of Flemming. It was slightly worse than the 2nd season. The investigation part was still fine in season 2-3 but there was too much on the personal life of Flemming and his ex-wife who happens to be the primary investigator. Realistic that.

Italian:
-italki: one 66 min session

Portuguese:
-Memrise
-Reading: Amor e medo no Caminho Santiago by Gonçalo JN Dias (12%)
-italki: one 60 min session

I started the PTLab book club book Amor e medo no Caminho Santiago and read through our assigned portion. The format is to read one week and discuss the next week as well as get answers to any grammar or other questions. This isn't a book I would have chosen but overall it's pretty easy reading so OK for my first Portuguese fiction book. However, this pace is much slower than I would typically read so I need to start another book. I had looked at another one on wine but it's one of those books that wasn't actually formatted for the Kindle so it's not possible to lookup words so not a good choice since I'm still trying to increase my vocabuary. Since I have to do something on the treadmill to distract me from the actual exercise I started doing Memrise on the iPad. It's pretty boring but gives me a chance to review a lot of vocabulary.

Re: Lingua's Log: IT, DE, PT, FR (+ dabbling in LAT, SCN, PMS, etc)

German:
-SRS (flashcards)
-Reading: Kochen und backen mit der Maus published by ZS Verlog (19%)

When I first started this cookbook I didn't read the intro which was about different food related things such as which oils to use for different purposes and so on. That was the first 5% of the book so I previously deducted it from my numbers but I ended up reading it this week as well as continuing on with the recipes. So far I've made 20 physical flash cards of cooking verbs for things like mix, cut, slice, drain, knead, etc. I've been going through them prior to reading until I remember all of them. I think for the next week I need to attempt to write out what I cook so I can use them more. I don't know why I find German vocabulary so much more difficult to remember than romance languages.

Italian:
-Podcast: Mangi come parli (129 mins)

I listened to three episodes of Mangia come parli. Subjects were le verdure farcite, le cotture al vapore & frutta e verdura, cotta e cruda. There is a thread elsewhere discussing accents of languages in the EU and it reminded me of the two hosts of Mangi come parli who sometimes correct each others pronunciation of words. I assume they are originally from different parts of Italy. As an example, I had this happen with an italki teacher in Sicily who would correct the way I said c'è even though I used a standard pronunciation and would have been corrected by other teachers if I used her pronunciation.

Piedmontese:
-Clozemaster
-Grammar: Il piemontese in tasca by Assimil (61%)

I did another conversation in the Assimil book. Subject was la gastronomia. Lots of vocabulary and some discussion of the regional food including the infamous bagna càuda which evidently has been around since the 1600s.

Portuguese:
-Memrise
-Reading: Amor e medo no Caminho Santiago by Gonçalo JN Dias (12%)
-Reading: Na cozinha com Henrique Sá Pessoa by Pessoa (19%)
-PT Lab: Breakthrough – Module 1 (B1)
-Wrote: 171 words

I started Na cozinha com Henrique Sá Pessoa and am finding it's an easy read. It seems to be taken from the chef's secret ingredient series as every recipe notes the secret ingredient and also includes some hints from the chef that might include some variations or preparation tips. This is the first book I've started on the Kobo app and in some ways I like it less than the Kindle but it might just be that I need to get used to it. This book was only available on Kobo and not Amazon US. I downloaded the English/Portuguese dictionary and Portuguese only dictionary so every word check includes both but the pop-up window is so small it requires excessive scrolling which is an annoyance. It also has weird pagination showing 1 of 2 or 2 of 3 pages for each recipe or what it perceives as a chapter. Why not show me the total pages of the book?

I finished up all the subjunctive modules and exercises in PTLab. As is often the case, the concept is easy enough to understand but the application is less than automatic. I did some writing on only one day and am not even close to my goal of 125+ words per day. I see some binge writing in my future.
