61. Dental dabbling (ja)

Japanese #6 (4h)

Submitted a short typed piece about what I do at the weekend, and working my way through Lesson 4 of Genki...

Today simultaneously marks a low and high point of the week. On the one hand, my dentist told me some real bad news and referred me to an endodontist. On the other hand, I had a nice chat in German with my Uber driver on the way over [edit: who said I had a very good accent :) ], and later arranged an appointment (including sharing my insurance details) with the endodontist's receptionist in mostly Japanese.

Japanese #7 (6h)

Lots of reviews and new kanji.

In addition to weekly classes, quizzes, and homework, I picked up a few bonus phrases in the wild this week. I learned 丁度いい (choudo ii = just right) from a taxi driver, お久しぶりです (ohisashiburi desu = long time no see) said humorously by my teacher after the weekend, and また来ます (mata kimasu = I'll come again) from a local resident. The latter is apparently something you could say to a shopkeeper while leaving, after the standard ありがとうございました (arigatou gozaimashita = thank you very much [past tense]).

63. A change of pace (ja)

Japanese #8 (11h)

More reviews and test preparation.

I sat a test on Tuesday covering everything we'd studied in class so far and Lessons 1-3 of Genki. Top tip: If there's time, always double-check your answers on the exam! And with that now out of the way, and ahead of schedule, I'm free again to study at my own pace over the next couple of weeks. I'd like to use this time to get further ahead and perhaps engage in some extra-curricular listening practice.

Japanese #9 (9h)

Lesson 4 of Genki textbook completed!

I spent the bulk of my time on textbook exercises for Lesson 4 and have a further 9 pages left to complete in the workbook. If I can finish this workbook assignment during my next 3DP, it'll put me about 2-3 weeks ahead of the class schedule. I've also started tuning in to Easy Japanese (Easy Languages) videos in the hope of boosting my listening and pronunciation skills.

To make things interesting and help stay motivated, I'd like to try something new... From today onwards, I'll add a graphic below and in future posts to represent how much supplementary active listening and speaking I've done in each of my core spoken second languages [edit]. Each section will start off empty and hopefully fill up with practice over time, the overall goal being to completely fill all 18 sections. :)

65. Pushing that boulder (ja)

Japanese #10 (7h)
  • Lesson 4 of Genki workbook completed!
  • 10 Japanese projects Image
I physically overdid things on Saturday and had a relapse of poor health. Nevertheless, I stoically pushed forwards at a more piecemeal pace and finished off the remaining workbook exercises for Lesson 4. Now that I'm a little ahead of the game in Japanese, I might start adding further languages to 3 Day Projects (as and when and to the degree that health permits)...

Japanese #11 (5h)
  • Working my way through Lesson 5 in the textbook...
Lesson 5 is all about using adjectives, which is exactly what I need to learn in Japanese right now. Once this chapter is well-digested, I'll have completed all the material set for my Japanese beginner's class this Fall. To follow up, my teacher suggests continuing with Genki in my own time for the remainder of the course (it goes up to Lesson 12 [~N5] in the first book), and has kindly offered to send me a copy of her schedule for the next level class.

67. First furlong (ja)

Japanese #12 (8h)
  • Completed Lesson 5 in Genki textbook!
  • Watched "Easy Japanese" videos #1-10.
At this point (over 100 hours in), my weakest link is clearly listening skills, so I'll continue chilling out with simple Japanese videos and rack up more listening and repeating. I've also registered with Japanese for the next 6 Week Challenge, as I think it will encourage me to continue with Genki once I'm fully done with Lesson 5, and who knows, perhaps reach the end of this book by Christmas.

  • Reviews and test preparation.
I've been extra busy running around doing things for the family lately, so language study has taken a back seat. I sat a couple of exams in class this week (covering Lessons 1-4 of Genki) and spent most of my study time on reviews and preparation. Once I've submitted my workbook exercises for Lesson 5, I'll probably turn my attention to speaking practice assignments and book a session with a tutor or conversation partner at the university.
