Whoa, that sounds cool! I really like the Manchu/Mongolian writing script, it just looks really neat. But Classical might be before that? Apparently (wikipedia says) it was brought in from Mongolian in 1599. I really know very little about Manchu other than the names that pop up in cheesy Chinese Qianlong dramas. Wikipedia says modern Manchu is down to 18 speakers. :|

Not much to report. Had a bad week for studying. I was really tired all week and had a ton of deadlines. Alas.

I did watch two movies that I want to share with you.

First, ももへの手紙 (A letter for Momo):

(terrible trailer, but the movie was enjoyable)

And a movie that had been on my list for a really long time, おくりびと (Departures):

This movie is amazing. I don't care what language you study, please watch it!

Oh, and I almost forgot! My Manchu classes started this week. Not much to say about this yet, except that I'm really looking forward to learning more :) I adore the writing system, even though it's still all 'Chinese' to me  ;)

I've got a conference going on all week so I'm taking a studying break (although not entirely, conference is somewhat related... studying never ends :| ). I've finished the Memrise N1 course, so I'm using this week to review vocab.

I did watch another movie earlier this week, Linda Linda Linda:

Enjoyable, not fantastic. But easy Japanese.

Maybe it's just because I'm so tired and busy lately, but I'm feeling a bit burned out. Not sure what to do about it though. If it wasn't for the JLPT in December, I'd happily take a break. I'm considering cutting down on my (serious) studying a bit though. Focus just on vocabulary and grammar, skip reading practice (which is my strong point anyway)...

I did watch another movie, 空中庭園 (The Hanging Garden). I can't make up my mind about it. It wasn't a bad movie, but it definitely wasn't my type of movie.

The movie is about a family who have the rule that, when asked directly, you don't keep a secret. I think you can imagine how that works out...

I've finally added Manchu to my log's title :D I am completely and utterly in love with this language (but that might be the honeymoon period  ) and I'm definitely serious about learning it.

The writing system is gorgeous! I really enjoy writing out text in Manchu. Mostly for the sake of learning the alphabet, which I'm recognising more quickly than I had expected. I admit I was pretty intimidated at first haha.

The grammar is also easier than I expected. So far it's quite close to Japanese with its suffixes.

brilliantyears wrote:Then tonight I watched 真夜中の弥次さん喜多さん (Yaji and Kita: the Midnight Pilgrims) and I have to admit I have a new favourite movie. It's a modern version of Tokaidochu Hizakurige. Even though I would be surprised if I understood even 10-15%(maybe?) of all the puns and pop culture references. I guess this is my new ultimate Japanese goal, hah.

I loved うぬぼれ刑事, which also starred Tomoya Nagase, so I will definitely have to watch this!

Learning a new script is probably my favorite part about learning languages. Too bad it only makes up like 1% of the language learning process with most languages. At least I got my money's worth from Japanese. :)
