Hello friends,
First of all, I would like to thank everyone in this community for this community! I have been stalking your discussions and logs for months now and have been inspired by how much you all encourage, challenge, and help each other learn languages. I hope you enjoy this thread where I document trying to learn too many languages and try to write and translate in/out of them while doing so. Corrections accepted with gratitude. First text is always the original.

EN: English: The Invader
[EN]
Native, immersed, monolingual until recently. The only thing I like about this language is that "cat" is just one syllable, which is convenient for me since I say it a lot. Won't have to do much to maintain this one since I will:
  • Continue speaking English to my friends in real life who are all monolingual English speakers
  • Continue speaking English to my monolingual cat
  • Continue speaking English at work
  • Continue speaking English at or on restaurants, grocery stores, doctors' offices, coffee shops, bookstores, parks, ice cream parlors, public transportation, convenience stores, the sidewalk, those buildings that sell you cat food
  • Continue listening to podcasts in English at 2x speed or 1x speed for John McWhorter
  • Continue watching in English the best television the world has ever seen: American television 2010-
EDIT: Title was originally written with "Stumbling" instead of "Slouching", maybe I should downgrade this to a C2 lol

FR: French: le français
[FR]

  • Rien d'autre

Merci d'être venus à ma présentation TED.

A few years ago I finished that thing with the green owl-with-ears-that-go-one-way (or is it the green owl-with-ears-that-go-the-other way? ill never figure it out) but I found out that I retained almost nothing from it when I started studying again at the beginning of last year. I did a lot of different things: Studied grammar on lingolia dot com, did R-L with free audiobooks, memorized vocabulary with a premade Anki deck, added all the words that I didn't know from "The Stranger", talked with iTalki teachers, shadowing, etc. Upon reflection my methods were very inefficient, particularly the words from "The Stranger". I don't think the words for "plane tree" and "asphodel" will ever be useful since I don't even know what they mean in English.

A funny thing: I'm taking the DELF B2 in about six days despite the fact that I still can't understand French TV without subtitles or share a casual conversation at a normal speed. Also, I want to write the essay and do the presentation straight from the heart without having ever even glanced at a tip or a coursebook. It's a strategy that's never worked in the past but we'll see. It'll be like a protest against the absurdity that you can pass the DELF with 5 points out of 50 per part and 50% overall. Or laziness, I don't know. (Seriously, I think that if you prepare directly for the exam it becomes a worse indicator of your skill level.) Good luck to me!

What I'm doing until the DELF:
  • An hour of iTalki per day
  • Probably around four hours on kwiziq dot com between today and tomorrow when my free trial expires
  • Thirty minutes a day writing about something DELFy
  • An hour watching French TV per week (so 2 hours before the exam)
  • Maybe about ten hours finishing reading the translation of "Cloud Atlas" before watching the overly sweetened film version

What I'll do after the DELF:
  • An hour of iTalki per week
  • Enough time on my flashcards so it doesn't pile up
  • An hour watching French TV per week
  • An hour reading French novels per week
  • Nothing else
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

KO: Korean:

In 2017 I studied a bit of Korean through Memrise but I don't really remember. Starting from New Year's 2018 I started studying hard. I studied grammar on howtostudykorean dot com, improved vocabulary with Anki, and if you exclude watching K-Dramas and reading novels I didn't really do anything else. Now my weak point is of course vocabulary. Advanced words in Korean are all two-Hanja words and are all similar to each other pronounciation-wise so it's been difficult improving my vocabulary. I've already gone through more than 5000 words in the Anki deck but I still can't understand news broadcasts. These days I already have to do 30 minutes of Anki every day so I don't really want to add any more.

What I'll do until August:
  • Wait until my Anki time goes below 25 minutes per day and then start adding cards again
  • Read novels every day until I explode
  • Watch dramas every day until I explode
  • Do two hours of talking to people on iTalki every week

What I'll do after:
  • Continue doing flashcards
  • Read novels for an hour every week
  • Watch TV for an hour every week
  • Do an hour of iTalki every week

Thanks for reading all of this for me.

I've been studying Chinese since last year but I still can't write in Chinese.
Sorry.
I've been studying an hour each day more or less.
Thanks everyone.

So what I'm doing:
  • Going through Beginning Chinese Reader at a rate of about one lesson every two days
  • Glossika every day set to 5 new sentences until my vocabulary gets to the point where there isn't a new word nearly every sentence, then ramp it up
  • An anki deck for characters and an Anki deck for vocabulary
  • Should probably start talking to tutors at some point before the terrible pronunciation ossifies

OK just to give you a sense of what a day looks like for me, this was yesterday. The time I spent on French is normally far less, but the time I spent on the others is fairly average. Also normally I spend my relaxing time watching TV or reading in my target languages, but instead of that yesterday I read this forum:

2019 June 06
FR
  • Anki deck: 6 minutes
  • Kwiziq quizzes: 9xC1, 15xB1: 66 minutes
  • iTalki session: 55 minutes:
Relaxed, casual, still have trouble with listening comprehension

KO
  • Hanja Anki deck: 9 minutes
  • Vocab Anki deck: 32 minutes
  • iTalki session: 53 minutes (started a bit late):
I would say that even a bit more than half of my sentences needed absolutely no correction! Slowly getting rid of bad grammar habits.
  • Watching the only good K-Drama in existence (불야성/不夜城): 19 minutes

ZH
  • Vocab Anki deck: 26 minutes
  • Hanzi Anki deck: 16 minutes
  • Glossika: 50 sentences;: 8 minutes
  • Beginning Chinese Reader Part I: Loading vocab from L20+L21 into Anki: 64 minutes
This part of the process is probably very inefficient but at the same time if I don't load the words myself I end up editing them later anyway. I justify it to myself as me learning the word by looking it up in dictionaries to confirm context and usage.

Very disappointed today. I took the itt-leipzig productive vocabulary test and got a result of 14/11/14/11/9 with 14/18 being the passing score per section. So if my errors were more evenly distributed I would have passed zero sections. I'll try the receptive vocabulary test tomorrow but dang, I expected to at least score very well on the first two parts! I thought I knew at least the first 3000 words of French like the back of my hand.

See above, still very disappointed by the result a day after. A bit humbling, I must admit.
  • Reading: Cartographie des nuages: 50 pages: 96 minutes
Finished the second part of the Sonmi story. My favorite section of the film so it makes sense that it's the same for the book. Though I must admit the Romanization of Korean place names did hurt my eyes. Will be interesting to read this section in the Korean translation. Another note: Very disappointed in the future-French of the Sloosha's Crossing section, which seemed like 100% Standard Hexagon French except all e's are replaced by apostrophes, an "-iot" diminutive is used, some different words like "Savance" for the English "Smart", and "pis" is used instead of "et" sometimes

OK; took the itt-leipzig for receptive vocabulary and it went better. 29/26/29/28/29 out of 30 per section, with 24 being a passing note. So it seems that my vocab knowledge is oddly evenly distributed across the first 5000 words. Also, unlike the productive test, I took only 19 of the 30 minutes.

Also, I've been meeting a lot of new people for my French conversations on iTalki. and I've noticed that comprehension in both directions is a lot lower than with my regular teachers. So there is somewhat of a discount for familiarity, which makes sense. It's also possible that I selected out people who are less comprehensible to me in the process of finding my regular French conversation partners.

"Norman, Cyprien, all the YouTube stars just have one name" or something like that. Are the French youtube kids much more famous over there? I can't imagine an American sitcom making a reference to jacksfilms or PewDiePie. Logan Paul only got mentioned on SNL ONCE because the dead body thing was big enough to make it into the normal news. Or maybe talking about youtube people is normal now and I'm just getting old.

Hello friends,
It's been a while! There is a lot to catch you up on. From now on I will try to update in week-long chunks. I also owe you all about three chunks then. Chunk the first:

2019 June 10-16: Log
Previous week TBA | Next week
FR: 570/34/126
  • ACQ: 100 minutes
    • Anki editing: 100 minutes
In retrospect, it was a mistake using a prebuilt deck. Most of this time was spent pruning words with the same headword and rewriting definitions to be better.
  • DRL: 207 minutes
    • DELF B2: 207 minutes
I purposefully did not prepare for this directly, which led to the Oral Production section going very badly for me. I thought that since the presentation I composed in my head was so beautiful, I did not need to write anything down except some key sentence fragments. That was not so. Also, while I thought I understood 90% of the Listening Comprehension and 99% of the Reading Comprehension sections, some of the questions just seemed difficult to answer even with the comprehension. Again, directly preparing for the exam would have helped here. Results not in yet as of this writing, We will see how it turns out!
  • SRS: 159 minutes:
    • Anki: +500 cards/250 words: 159 minutes
  • INL: 0
  • INR: 0
  • PRO: 63 minutes
    • iTalki: 63 minutes
I was trying to do an hour of iTalki every day before the exam, which meant meeting a lot of new tutors. This one I would describe as an offbeat old lady who in a conversation you'd expect to say interesting things as well as a few things that are not quite on, without any bad intention on her part. She remarked that my accent in French was neither American nor that of my parents' home country, though my accent in English is as General American as you can get, and I said that I grew up in the United States. She also said that I might not quite yet be ready to read The Stranger, of which I intensively read once and extensively read twice a YEAR ago. I was actually much more insulted by the latter. To think that I am not ready for the book that is just after The Little Prince in every list of French novels for beginner French learners? I, who am already devouring Descartes???
  • PRW: 41 minutes
I took a DELF B2 Written Production prompt and did it, but I do not count this as direct preparation. Direct preparation would be taking what I wrote to a tutor and having them give corrections, an estimate of the score, and suggestions on what I could do better. I have not shown what I wrote to a soul but mostly because I keep forgetting to bring it up. Do you want to see it?
