Since Saturday, I've been with my girlfriend and we are now on holiday with her family. So next week's log (i.e. this current week) won't have too much to show, but that's okay. I'm sure we'll have time to schedule a few French programmes at least!

Well, turns out I only have 5/7ths of my written language log with me, so I'll have to update the other two days when I get back home (1-2 weeks). How unfortunate.

Mon 8th:
    French reading (29)
    Arabic L6 (130)
Tues 9th:
    Arabic (120)
Wed 10th:
    Spanish reading (20)
    Arabic phrases (30)
More Arabic, L7 in book started (70)
Thurs 11th:
    French video (6)
    Spanish video (7)
    Russian reading (60)
    Quora in French (20)
    French reading (15)
    Russian video (8)
Fri 12th:
    Russian video (16)
Sat 13th:
    Just Anki
Sun 14th:
    Just Anki

Didn't practise my Chinese characters this last week, but my girlfriend enjoys/puts up with testing me so probably get some practice this week.

Total time this week (of which is not spent on Anki)(of which is spent on Anki):
Arabic - 364 minutes (100)(3+2+2+3+3+3+3=19)
Russian - 146 minutes (84)(11+11+10+11+9+16+16=84)
French - 87 minutes (41)(3+3+3+3+3+0+8=23)
Chinese - 55 minutes (0)(5+4+3+5+5+5+6=33)
Spanish - 39 minutes (27)(2+3+2+3+2+0+5=17)

As I said, on holiday, so done mostly Anki, but a few other things here and there.

Sat 20th:

Sun 21th:
French episode of "Au Service de la France" (25)

The podcast was while we were travelling to and from somewhere for the day, which was a good use of time! Did it another day, but fell asleep, so not as good...
Next week, I'd like to re-up my numbers and get lots of Russian done.

Finally updated my log from 2 weeks back. And now for this week.

Mon 22nd:
    Arabic finish L8 (15)
Tues 23rd:
Russian video "Real Russian Club" (26)
Wed 24th:
    Just Anki
Thurs 25th:
Episode of "Casa de Papel" (41)
Fri 26th:
Episode of a chinese show (37)
    French video (6)
Sat 27th:
    Arabic L9 start (50)
Sun 28th:
Russian video "Real Russian Club" (20)
    French video (6)

I've watched one episode of La Casa de Papel before this, so this was episode 2. It's enjoyable with subtitles (and a bit of difficulty) and I'm hoping to not need them at some stage in the (far) future.

Total time this week (of which is not spent on Anki)(of which is spent on Anki):
Russian - 114 minutes (46)(8+13+8+10+13+0+16=68)
Arabic - 101 minutes (65)(8+3+6+5+4+5+5=36)
Spanish - 66 minutes (41)(4+2+3+3+3+0+10=25)
Chinese - 59 minutes (37)(3+3+5+2+4+2+3=22)
French - 41 minutes (12)(3+4+4+3+8+0+7=29)

Re: GC1998's Language Log

Postby GC1998 » Wed Aug 28, 2019 4:01 pm

I was in a very good habit of updating my log each week, but unfortunately when I break a habit, it can sometimes take me a long time to get going again. In total I think there's 4 weeks, but I'll just give a little run down on what I've done. The thing that messed up the scheduling was moving to our current term time accommodation and getting wifi sorted and stuff. We went to the library so no excuse to not do languages, but it's fine to have some time off.

I've mostly been doing Anki, but some days I forget and sometimes I've been slacking a bit and just saying I got some answers right and doing them quickly. This is a bad habit, but again hopefully one I'll not do so much now I'm more settled down and getting into my old routines.

Most of what I've been doing is what I normally do, just half as much or less. The week we moved, I literally did nothing but Anki, but the other weeks I've managed to watch some videos, read a bit, watch a show or two and carry on with my Arabic lessons (less Arabic than I'd like personally, I feel like I haven't done too much in a while).

I have come to the realisation that I should be doing more Chinese however, which makes me think I'll have to put Arabic back down again. It's only one month before university starts again and I have completed the Chinese 2 course lessons in the text book, but I haven't yet completed all the moodle lessons online with extra words and such. I've recently got back into the habit of testing my Chinese characters. At first it felt hard, like I'd never even learnt these characters in the first place, but a few days in, I'm getting back into it. (I remember pretty much all of the pinyin, so at least that's good!)

I don't know how much I'll do this week. To be honest, it hasn't started off that great, but I'll set myself a target of 210 minutes of study = 30 minutes a day on average. (not including Anki).

It took me ages to update my spreadsheet, but I finally did it. Over the past four weeks I did a total of 1332 minutes = 22.2 hours = 5.55 hours per week, which really isn't too bad. But at the same time, I don't really do anything else, so I should do more.

I'll (hopefully) write about this week on Monday like I usually do.

Started off the week a little bit shaky, but I achieved my goal of an average of 30 mins a day (not including Anki). For next week I'll aim for 5 hours total study, not including Anki. A while back, I was in pretty good habits of reading almost every day (interchanging French and Spanish), so I'll like to try and read a bit more next week too.

Mon 26th/Tues 27th:
    Just Anki both days
Wed 28th:
    Chinese writing practice (45)
Thurs 29th:
    Chinese writing practice (30)
    Frequency list for Russian (32)
    Spanish reading "El Alquimista" (26)
French episode "Au Service de la France" (31)
Fri 30th:
    Chinese writing practice (28)
    Arabic, continuing lesson 10 (49)
Sat 31st:
    Chinese writing practice (22)
French episode "Au Service de la France" (29)
Sun 1st:
    Chinese writing practice (13)

Total time this week (of which is not spent on Anki)(of which is spent on Anki):
Chinese - 166 minutes (134)(0+0+20+5+2+3+2=32)
Russian - 129 minutes (32)(2+20+19+7+17+16+16=97)
Arabic - 83 minutes (49)(0+9+7+0+11+0+7=34)

I let both the fr/es reading and the Chinese practice slip towards the end of the week, oops. I reached my target of 5 hours total though, so that's good. Next week's target, 6 hours total. Might be more tricky as I'm going to my girlfriend's parent's house on Saturday for her birthday, but we'll see how much I can get done.

Mon 2nd:
    French reading (26)
    Chinese writing practice (26)
Tues 3rd:
    Chinese moodle (75)
    Russian reading (27)
    Arabic book (39)
    Chinese writing practice (15)
Wed 4th:
    Just Anki
Thurs 5th:
    Spanish reading (27)
Fri 6th:
    Arabic book (25)
Sat 7th:
    Arabic book (45)
Sun 8th:
    Just Anki

I'm now half way through "20.000 lieues sous les mers". It's quite slow going, but very enjoyable. I'm nearing the end of "El Alquimista", so will be starting a new Spanish book in the 'near' future.

Total time this week (of which is not spent on Anki)(of which is spent on Anki):
Arabic - 151 minutes (109)(6+4+6+7+8+8+3=42)
Chinese - 138 minutes (116)(4+4+3+3+3+4+1=22)
Russian - 114 minutes (27)(18+14+11+9+13+12+10=87)
Spanish - 56 minutes (27)(2+4+4+5+6+4+4=29)

A pretty good week! I still want to be concentrating on Chinese (even though I'm not) before university starts. I've finished all the lessons of the book that I would have taken if I didn't do a year abroad, but there's more words and extra practice on Moodle. I just hope doing it by myself, I haven't missed valuable speaking practice, because I don't speak enough.

Mon 9th:
    Nothing at all
Tues 10th:
    Chinese listening practice (38)
    French reading (21)
Wed 11th:
    Arabic L11 start (63)
Thurs 12th:
    Russian video (37)
Fri 13th:
    Spanish reading (45)
    Chinese writing practice (30)
Sat 14th:
    Just Anki
Sun 15th:
    Spanish reading the news (33)
    Spanish reading (12)
    Arabic L11 (54)

Total time this week (of which is not spent on Anki)(of which is spent on Anki):
Arabic - 158 minutes (117)(0+6+7+5+5+8+10=41)
Russian - 125 minutes (37)(0+14+11+13+0+32+18=88)
Spanish - 121 minutes (90)(0+6+3+3+12+3+4=31)

Monday and Tuesday were spent mostly having birthday fun with my girlfriend. I still found time to do flashcards which is good. The rest of the week was really quite good.

Wed 18th:
    Chinese moodle (71)
    Russian frequency list (24)
Thurs 19th:
    Russian frequency list (47)
    Arabic Lesson 11 (60)
    French reading (21)
Fri 20th:
    Chinese listening practice (20)
Sat 21st:
    Chinese writing (36)
    Russian Peppa Pig (44)
Sun 22rd:
    Chinese moodle (60)
    Russian Peppa Pig (48)

The Peppa Pig is a kind of experiment to see how much I can learn from it. Currently, my comprehension is high-ish when I read the script, but listening comprehension is on the lower side. I'm hoping in watching something like this, I can improve my listening skills. If my experiment goes well, I could also improve my Chinese listening comprehension in the same way.

I didn't do any Spanish this week, and only a bit of French, so I'd like to try and do a bit more of them next week. I'll have to make good use of my remaining week of free time before university starts again.

Total time this week (of which is not spent on Anki)(of which is spent on Anki):
Russian - 272 minutes (163)(17+12+14+16+19+21+10=109)
Chinese - 221 minutes (187)(4+3+6+4+4+6+7=34)
Arabic - 112 minutes (60)(6+4+9+8+9+8+8=52)
French - 41 minutes (21)(1+2+3+2+8+2+2=20)
Spanish - 26 minutes (0)(4+3+3+5+5+2+4=26)

I usually have two "main" languages per quarter of the year. This quarter's main languages were supposed to be Russian and Arabic, hence I've been doing more of those two than French and Spanish, but I've been doing more Chinese lately as I'll be taking Chinese classes when university starts.

So, yes, I do them all simultaneously, but some I do more than others.
