OK, time to write about "Muzicofilia" by Oliver Sacks. By a strange coincidence I have written about another book by this British psychiatrist and author, "The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" in this very thread not long ago, so when I saw about music written by him I grabbed it - and it didn't even ruin me, since the price was a mere 59 RON (59 lei, approx. 13 € or 15 $). The only catch was that it was a Romanian translation, but that suits my language ressuscitation program like a glove, and I found that it only contained a few incomprehensible words per page - unlike to the travelogue anthology I described earlier, where I felt I had to thrash through some seriously dense lexicological underwood. Luckily I had clear evidence that it only was the Romanian writers who displayed a tendency to ostentate the extent of their native huge vocabularies and not me who had an unduly restricted one. The proof was that most of the words I looked up in my newly aquired micro dictionary weren't found there - and given that the Romanian part is supposed to contain some 17.500 words and expressions (mostly words) I'm in good company. I have long been thinking that there must be some kind of statistical model that permits you to estimate the size of your
own vocabulary based on the number of words you
fail to find in dictionary with a certain number of words - but I'm currently not capable of doing the math.
OK, back to Sacks. The book is basically a description with lots of case stories of just about anything that makes the musical univers of humans diverge from the standard, in particular the kind of cases where a connection to brain lesions could be established. So it is not an analysis of the notion of musicality in general you find here, but with such a plethory of descriptions of positive and negative aberrations from the normal humdrum you do nevertheless get some sense of how the musicality mechanism functions even in healthy 'normal' humans.
SCO: And o coorse you isnae gotta get the tale in English (awbeit that leid wad be halely permissible here, gien that Sacks wrate his beuk in English) so ... let's see, whit should ah choose.. let's do the stairt in Esperanto!
