EN: So now this thread has passed 40.000 views ... I always wonder whether people really read the stuff I write about since much of it is in NotEnglish and deals with Notlanguagelearning, but I'm happy that there still are curious minds around.

I have spent one dull day organizing and uploading one issue of the club magazine of my travel club, and since it's all in Danish it doesn't contribute to my learning process - but my travelling does. The main problem in relation to my status in that club is that most of the languages I study are European and I have already visited all countries in Europe, so superficially it looks like I have become landlocked and never leave home any more. But I do intend to travel a few times more this year - like a trip to the three Guyanas later this year.

Nîmes_F0642b03.JPG

Finally a few words about Danish grammar. I spoke about the same things a few years ago in Berlin, but to an almost empty room and with illustrations I had been asked to provide several months before the event, with the result that they didn't match what I wanted to say - and what I wanted to say was already fairly complicated so that didn't help matters.

We have "som" and "der" as relative pronouns. "Der" is originally a demonstrative locative pronoun which somehow got one more role to fill, and it can only be used as a subject. "Som" is a comparison pronoun which can be used as subject and as object (accusative and dative object):

"han spiste pizzaen, som/der lå på hans tallerken" (He ate the pizza that lay upon his plate) , but only "han spiste pizzaen, som hun havde lagt på hans tallerken" (he ate the pizza, which she had placed on his plate".

And then we have a pure conjunction "at" to be used in substantive clauses (or "phrases complétives", as we were told to call them in French during my study years forty years ago). Like English "that" it is an old demonstrative which has lost its referential meaning, but in all likelihood it started out refererring to the whole sentence that followed: "he said that: dahumdahumdahum". I once tried to find examples of this kind and found some in Old High German, but it must have happened long ago - if ever.. but try to find a better explanation! Never mind, in Danish it is officially not used as a relative, but you do - albeit rarely - hear things like "manden at kom" (manThe that came), which would make any teacher of Danish grasp his/her red pencil. And we can often drop the "at", which may be part of the explanation of the fact that it sometimes is introduced in unexpected places.

WIth these as the official syntax rules governing correct sentences, how come then that I can hear the following sentence on Danish TV during a quite ordinary quiz ("Klipfiskerne")?

I believe it is him the grown-up who that there manages-to-do it)

My guess is that "at" has become so devoid of its reference that it is seen as a general subordinating conjunction that can be used almost anywhere, maybe just as a filler or for euphoneous reasons. The sentence about wouldn't be possible with "der" as the first relative pronoun (i.e. not "jeg tror at det er ham den voksne, *der at som klarer den"), so even though "som" here is the subject of the clause it may be felt as too 'vague' - and then an extra subordination marker is introduced. Could you say ""at som der" ? Well, I couldn't exclude the possibility, but it would be more controversial because you then also would have to be one of those Danes who use "at" as a relative conjunction - and I'm not (well, at least I don't think I am - but who knows?) However now we have a relative clause with an "at", and that is also somewhat controversial, so to hammer down the message that this really is a relative clause with a relative subject the "der" is added, just to make things clear.

Is this a rare construction? No, actually it is fairly common - but still not accepted as correct Danish.

I read the bits in languages I understand, look at the pictures, and let my eyes slide over the rest. Your log is definitely one of my favourites...even if I can't read much of it.

Well, then look around you to see that nobody is watching you ... and use Google translate. That's what I do when people write in Asiatic languages or Arab or things like that. Or Finnish or Hungarian, for that matter.

I can read most of your languages but I tend to just skim and only read the parts about animals and archaeological discoveries in detail. My favourite is the Kunst collection :P
