Was that a paper book? The size of the thing alone would be challenge :-)

yes, a paper book. getting on for 7cm thick. hence me likening it to a brick. :D

I just got the sequel & it's one of those ridiculous paperbacks that's closer to A4 than to folio size. :(

grammar snippet of the week, from Le Monde:

« Vu la situation, je ne peux pas remplir le mandat sur lequel j’ai été élue par le Parti conservateur »

passive voice agreement of the past participle with the subject.

more reading & more watching since last time - 70 books/3,5k pages & 70 films/105 hours now.

I've been watching some Un Village Français & although with some characters I still feel a bit like "there were three people talking, one seemed angry about something" (from the The REAL meaning of the CEFR Levels thread :) ), I do okay with most of the rest.

the The Rest is History podcast had an episode on French History on Film recently, so I may give a few of those a go. I watched La Grande Vadrouille a few years ago & barely understood a word, but I may give it another go now that my listening comprehension is rather better.

I did a few chapters from the Edito B1 book & a bunch of Anki.

French expression of the week: parler français comme une vache espagnole

thanks to Rory Stewart interviewing François Hollande on the The Rest is Politics podcast for that one. :D

more of the same really. 125hrs of SC watching now; not so much reading lately. still Anki'ing & working my way through the Edito B11 book.

Lawless/KwizIQ had a Halloween offer, so I've got that now for three months, which suits me as I'm a sucker for their progress map & a little gamified encouragement to study grammar can't be a bad thing.

I found this DELF B1 playlist/channel which seems rather good:
Le French Club - DELF B1 playlist

I've been offered the chance at my job to work rather more closely with our French & French-Canadian teams. they're not expecting any real level of fluency from me, but whatever French I can take to it is a bonus for them. so I have some industry-specific vocab to learn.

in non-French news, I watched Raise The Red Lantern in Mandarin (with subs) & recognized the word tofu and absolutely nothing else.

I finally finished La Communauté des Esprits which I started back in June, although I have completed several other books in parallel. SC reading now at 4,500/5,000 pages.

still watching Un Village Français & the X-files - 130/150 hours for the SC now.

I've been doing Anki a bit more consistently lately. I did a few modules from the Edito B1 book & put all the vocab in my Anki deck.

doing the SC has been really helpful, but it has rather distracted me from actual *studying*. I'm quite looking forward to letting the SC slide for a few weeks while I do Cavesa's AI6WC challenge.

still haven't got around to any iTalki. :(

a quick pre-AI6WC update ...

finished Une Colonne de Feu which was a bit of a slog, but I still quite enjoyed it. I've picked up Alice au Pays des Merveilles which I read a bit of back in June, which I now seem to be zipping through - having pages half the size of the last one probably helps. 4,700/5,000 pages now for the SC.

still watching the X-Files & Un Village Français, plus bits & pieces of French YouTube. 133/150 hours for the SC.

quite a lot of Anki - a couple more modules' worth from the Edito B1 book into the deck.

reading: I finished Alice au Pays des Merveilles - glad to be rid of this tiresome book, it's a mystery (to me) why it's considered a classic. I started La Belle Savage by Philip Pullman which is a bit more to my tastes.

I am reading Meursalt, contre-enquête by Kamel Daoud intensively for the AI6WC which is a bit more literary & heavier-going.

4,850/5,000 pages for the SC.

speaking/writing: I had a lesson with a new iTalki tutor who seems okay & who seems happy to do what I want, namely DELF B1-type speaking/writing tasks. I asked for some writing homework, which he set me & which I am going to be atrocious at, which we can correct in the next session.

we had a slight disagreement about whether formal letter writing was in the B1 exam - he thinks so, I think not. I'm pretty sure that the B1 writing task is either an informal letter, an essay or an article, & that formal letters are in the B2. does anyone know either way?

does anyone record their iTalki (or other online) sessions for review? do you find it useful if you do?

study: some more Anki & Edito B1. annoyingly I seem to have lost the CD from the Edito book, or it never came with one (it was 2nd hand). does anyone have one that I could grab a copy of?

watching/listening: more X-Files, more Un Village Français, more YouTube. 144/150 hours for the SC.

some New Year's goals:

1. finish the double Super Challenge
2. do the 365 Challenge
3. use French more at work
4. lots more iTalki & speaking/writing practice
5. take* the DELF B1 exam

this week I finished Meursalt, contre-enquête by Kamel Daoud, done as intensive reading for the AI6WC. as a Camus fan I thought was pretty clever & well-written, although a bit tough-going to start with as it's rather more literary than most of what I've been reading.

I finished the Super Challenge which I'm quite chuffed about, now I just need to do the same again for the double.

* note: passer but not necessarily pass
