Just looked it up and it (fte.'ro) is indeed cognate with "feather." That's some Indoeuropean lore right there.

The same root also gives πετάω (= to fly, throw).

I wrote in the New Year's resolutions thread that I would learn 5200 Greek words in 2025. So let's kick things off:

εγκαίρως: in time, timely
επιδεινώνω: to deteriorate, worsen
βουλιάζω (βούλιαξα, βουλιαγμένος): to go under, sink
τρομακτικός: scary, frightening
η πορνεία: prostitution
και πάει λέγοντας: ...and counting, and so on
η άρνηση (αρνούμαι): negation, denial, refusal
παραδίδω (παρέδωσα, να παραδώ): to hand over, deliver
τιμωρώ: to punish
πολύπλοκος: complicated, complex
προσαρμόζω: to adapt, adjust
ο υπεύθυνος / η υπεύθηνη: manager, person in charge
η συννοσηρότητα: comorbidity
η ζήτημα: issue, question, matter
προσωρινός: temporary, provisional

Still reading the article about Internet addiction. I think today was the first time I've gone three decent sized paragraphs without hitting an unknown word.

I got much less Greek study done in the first week of 2025 than I would have liked but I've still added 60 cards to Anki so far. These are today's cards:

απαριθμώ: to enumerate, list
αποστηθίζω: to memorize, learn by heart
η κραυγή: shout, yell, cry
η φλυαρία: blather, chatter, babble
η μαϊμού (μαϊμούδες): (1) monkey (2) knockoff (product)
ανεπαρκής: inadequate, insufficient, incompetent
η επανάσταση: revolution (political, technological)
εντείνομαι (εντάθηκα): to become more intense
το εργαλείο: tool
οξύς -εία -ύ: sharp, acute, shrill, pointed (remark etc.)

They come from this Kathimerini article: https://www.kathimerini.gr/k/k-magazine ... -eidikoys/

Day 11 of 2025. Today's ten words (0086 - 0095):

ο χωρισμός: divorce, separation, breakup
ο πένθος: mourning, bereavement
εξωθώ: to push, push out, provoke
μεσολαβώ: to intervene, mediate, be between
η πλειονότητα: majority
συνεπής: consistent, punctual
ποικίλλω: to vary, range
αναβάλλω (ανέβαλα): to postpone, put off
ευερέθιστος: short-tempered, irritable
ο άξονας: axis, hub, shaft

A couple example sentences:

Κάποιος στρεσογόνος παράγοντας –χωρισμός, πένθος, οικονομικές δυσκολίες– εξωθεί κατά κανόνα κάποιον να περάσει την κόκκινη γραμμή.
Some stress-inducing factor -- divorce, bereavement, financial difficulties -- generally pushes someone to step over the red line [into alcohol abuse].

...άλλοι είναι ευερέθιστοι, απομονώνονται ή επιζητούν παρέες στις οποίες ο κοινός άξονας είναι το ποτό.
...others are irritable, isolate themselves, or seek out friend groups in which the common element is drinking.

Good phrases:
περνάω την κόκκινη γραμμή (to cross, step over the red line)
ο κοινός άξονας (point of unity, common element, shared interest)

Day 12 of 2025. Eleven words today (words 0096 - 0106):

το τροχαίο [ατύχημα]: road accident
ο τροχός: wheel
παραπλανητικός: misleading
το κατώλφι: threshold, doorstep
εν αγνοία: unknowingly
η σαφήνεια: clarity
η παρηγοριά: consolation, solace
εκλεπτυσμένος: refined, cultured (εκλεπτύνω = to refine)
τρεκλίζω: to stagger when walking, wobble
συναναστρέφομαι (συναναστράφηκα): to spend time with friends
καταφατικός (καταφάσκω): affirmative

A couple example sentences:

Αρχικά ήταν ένας «εκλεπτυσμένος» πότης, «έπινα ακριβό ρούμι και καλά ουίσκι».
At first he was a "sophisticated" drunk, "I drank expensive rum and good whisky."

Πίστευα, πάντοτε, ότι ο αλκοολικός είναι ο άνθρωπος που τρεκλίζει και δεν μπορεί να ανταποκριθεί στις καθημερινές του υποχρεώσεις.
I [had] always believed that an alcoholic was the guy who staggers around and can't meet daily obligations.

ανταποκρίνομαι (ανταποκριθεί above) means "to respond to" but also has the sense of fulfilling a duty or promise, of "delivering" on something.

Day 13 of 2025. Eleven words for today (words 0107 - 0117):

μπουχτίζω: to be fed up, to get sick of
ρόδινος: rosy, easy (fig.)
εφικτός: possible, doable
νηφάλιος: sober
η ψυχαγωγία: entertainment
ξεκλειδώνω: to unlock
εκτυλίσσω (εκτύλιξα): to unwrap, unroll, unravel
ανώτατος: supreme, of the highest rank
το αγγείο (ανθρώπινο σώμα): blood vessel
ένοχος: guilty, culpable, incriminated
η εμφάνιση (μιας ασθένειας): onset, development (of illness)

Some good sentences:

Εκτυλίσσεται μια μεγάλη συζήτηση σχετικά με τα ανώτατα επιτρεπτά όρια κατανάλωσης.
A big discussion is developing in relation to the maximum allowable levels of consumption.

Πολλές έρευνες των τελευταίων ετών ανέδειξαν την ευεργετική επίδραση της κατανάλωσης κόκκινου κρασιού στα καρδιαγγειακά νοσήματα και στον διαβήτη τύπου Β, απενοχοποιώντας πολλούς λάτρεις αυτού.
Many studies in recent years had shown the positive effect of red wine consumption on cardiovascular illnesses and type II diabetes, leaving its enthusiasts [to drink] guilt-free.

That last phrase is a pretty free translation. ενοχοποιώ means to accuse or incriminate, so απενοχοποιώ is to "disincriminate," to free from guilt or suspicion.
