I found another podcast:
"Zeg het in het Nederlands".
Seems good, in that they use real world examples, speak slowly, and explain everything in Dutch.

"het waren er heel veel"
It stands out to me because I'd say "er waren heel veel". But I guess you need the "het"?
There is some difference between the two sentences. The first, het waren er heel veel is: 'there were a lot of them'. Whereas the second, er waren heel veel is: 'there were a lot'.
The 'het' thing is because it's treated as a unified (pro)noun and so is referred to as 'it'. Both forms are used, but with these plural 'antecedents' you get het/dit/dat used quite a lot. Though also 'ze zijn'. Examples:
Mijn opa en oma liegen bijna nooit = my grandpa and grandma almost never lie
Ja, het zijn eerlijke mensen/ze zijn eerlijke mensen = Yes, they're honest people.
Het zijn waardeloze dingen = They are worthless things.
It's really common to hear: het zijn de beste mensen, rather than 'ze zijn' de beste mensen. You'll see such things as: 'Dit zijn de beste smartphones van 2022.' Where you might expect 'deze'.

Right! It is the quantative 'er' which I described here. (ervan)
I understood it after your explanation.

Re: Geschiedenis van Nederland (Dutch log)
I will be taking a break from Dutch, and focus on German, because I'm going to need German in two weeks. So I'd like to read and listen in German to "warm up", and I don't think it's a good idea to study both languages at the same time.
I have read 20% of Geschiedenis van Nederland. Which is not a lot. I was too lazy to read every day.

Re: Geschiedenis van Nederland (Dutch log)
I had a break and I'm getting back to Dutch now.
Reading Dutch history. I'm in the 16th century, and the Netherlands (and Belgium) are provinces under the rule of Filip of Spain. He was part of the Habsburg rulers, and they ruled quite an empire: Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Spain. Not to mention the colonies of Spain.

Well, the 17 Dutch provinces are somewhat intractable, and sceptical towards catholicism.
