Re: South Africa's story in 12 Languages
I love the sound of Nguni languages (e.g., Xhosa, Zulu, Ndebele, Swati) and Zulu's on my wish list! Thanks for the link, Jaleel10.

I was really surprised that they all said numbers & years in English.

Beautiful, thank you! I hadn't heard of Venda before. It sounds a lot like Italian.

Re: South Africa's story in 12 Languages
I noticed that in several of the languages the years seem to be expressed in English (e.g. 1999 was spoken as "nineteen ninety nine"). I wonder why that is?

In her speech to the Polyglot Gathering the lady form uTalk mentioned that some languages have such a cumbersome way of saying numbers that native speakers sometimes prefer to switch to english.arthaey wrote:I was really surprised that they all said numbers & years in English.

Oh all right, not that much like Italian, and in any case things sound very different to a native speaker There were moments, mostly at the ends of utterances, that did genuinely reminded me of Italian though.
