He has been there for only a month now, before he was three years in France. Where did he learn this good English?

Re: Football and languages
Ah, only just found this thread, and looking forward to going through the posts carefully later!
For now: I actually think Emery failed at Arsenal because of his English. (Obviously there were other factors too, but I think he'd have managed to get past a lot of them if he'd have been able to communicate better).

Re: Football and languages
Unai Emery was actually the coach at Spartak Moscow in 2012. AFAIU at the time he didn't speak any English, and obviously not Russian either, so he could only communicate directly with the players who speak Spanish or Portuguese natively. He had to use an interpreter with everyone else. (Here it's normal for a foreign coach not to speak Russian, but normally they speak English)
He wasn't successful - he was appointed in May and fired in November.
At the time he concluded one of the problems was his English, and he began learning it. So he's had plenty of time I think he still has a mediocre pronunciation (I've seen the video of him saying good evening, yes) but I'm not sure he actually failed to communicate with Arsenal players? Any other videos?
When he did well at Sevilla, most Spartak fans thought he should have been given more time, but after Arsenal many reconsidered
As for Tuchel, it's pretty normal for a German to speak good English.

Re: Football and languages
El Clásico day!
some things I've been meaning to post:
-in his biography Luka Modrić revealed that during his first season for RM he watched Mexican telenovelas in order to improve his Spanish
-Uruguayan Darwin Núñez joined Benfica last summer. A few weeks ago he gave an interview as an MVP of the match and it was obvious that he's been actually learning Portuguese, he's probably taken some classes and you could tell he's seen Portuguese in writing, unlike many Spanish-speaking players I searched twitter for "darwin português" and sure enough many fans praised him He doesn't speak perfectly of course but simply not saying words like pués or jugar the Spanish way already creates a good impression
- https://elpais.com/deportes/2021-03-14/ ... bueno.html a fascinating interview with van Basten

Well at some level yes. I mean communication isn't just speaking the same language, but it's (obviously xD) a huge factor. If you say something stupid in a broken language (where you're expected to speak better) then you'll be much more harshly punished than if you'd've said it like a native. And he said some things which weren't great:/ was hard to be convinced:/
