"Phoque" definitely got a few raised eyebrows when someone asked me what the French word for seal was at my conversation group a couple months back.

This makes me think of the Pho restaurant near my office. Like many restaurants it has a catchy name...they added "king" to make Pho King. Which if you pronounce it like "fuh" (supposedly the correct pronunciation ) it makes for a fun combo!

The Thai word for squash (vegetable) is pronounced fak.

There are often problems with transliterating Thai to English. The word for "bless" is often used at the end of last names. It is pronounced "pawn" but transliterated as "porn". I know a girl with the last name Titiporn.

All Thais are given nicknames at birth and Poo (crab) is a common one. There is a famous Thai cookbook called "Cooking with Poo". I saw it posted on Facebook and thought it had to be a photoshop but it's real. The reviews on Amazon are pretty funny.

It has always entertained me that the Russian word for Brother, and therefore, also the title of the famous film, is Брат (pronounced brat). Shockingly, my brother doesn't find this as funny.

(edit: posted this and then actually read the article)

I wouldn't say that друг actually sounds like drug at all? What do other people think?

Yeah, in a Clockwork Orange Alex’s mates are his “droogs,” not his “drugs.” ;)
