Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
If resources outside of time were all you needed to learn a language my Japanese would be amazing. My Swedish and Danish would as well, but as an L2 my Japanese would be second only to German. And I mean if that was the case too I'd be able to pass the Goethe C2 test in my sleep
However, time is so important. That and physical and mental energy.

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
I'm not learning German because it is not December yet.
Speaking about languages I'll probably never want to learn, I'd name Esperanto, because it wasn't born in a natural way, and Latin, because it's a dead language. But I can't commit myself even on that - I can easily change my mind later.

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
I'm not learning Czech, because I want(ed) to learn Slovak. I mean that really makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?
1. It takes only 1-2 hours to the Czech border. - I have to cross the whole Czech Republic to reach Slovakia.
2. There's much more material for learning Czech.
3. There are more people in Czech Republic than in Slovakia.
4. I would have had the chance to get free Czech courses at university. The only Slovak courses would have been really expensive, if they're held at all.
5. After learning Finnish (and making use of it) I definitely need another rather useless language. I mean what would I want with a language where I could really meet natives on the street? Or other learners?
6. The Czech language has the letter ř. Slovak doesn't.
(7. Slovak is supposed to be a bit more regular and making the understanding of other Slavic languages easier than others.)
I'm not doing anything in Slovak right know (I have some material at home!), because ehm Spanish and Swedish are taking enough time already. Poor Slovak.

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
I guess I would answer this by writing something like, "I'm not learning any other languages right now because I am focusing on Finnish and Hungarian." This means that Spanish, Afrikaans, Swedish and Polish etc. will have to wait till later.

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
Tiia, do you have any idea how many Slovak natives live in the Czech Republic? Sometimes it's even hard to find a czech among the slovaks (for example at my faculty).
A joke: Studenti v Brně dostali otázku "Vadí vám vysoký počet slováků na vaší fakultě?" 20% Ano, 80% Nie
Translation: Students in Brno got a question: "Do you mind the high numbers of slovaks at your faculty?" 20% Yes in Czech, 80% No in Slovak
...........
I'm not learning any language right now, because I can't till my stupid exam.
But in general:
I'm not learning Swedish, because everything about it is so damn expensive. Coursebooks, media, delivery fees, travelling, everything.
I'm not learning Portuguese, because I have already fulfilled my quota of planned romance languages. And Portugal is really far away.
I'm not learning Hebrew or Arabic, because not only I don't know whether I am ready for such a commitment, but I also cannot choose between them.
I'm not learning Hungarian, because a boyfriend dumped me in Budapest. Looking back at the whole relationship, I am so glad he did But still, there are better and worse ways to handle break ups and he chose to make it as difficult as possible. No Hungarian or Budapest for me, at least for a few more years. And I don't care the city was not to blame!
I'm not learning Dutch, because I cannot imagine spending much time in a country where everyone is twice as high as me. (And I am talking about real height here, no double sense intended! )
I'm not learning Vietnamese because there are almost no resources (how is it possible?! They are a very important minority!) and the natives I've heard weren't too excited about the idea of Czechs learning it. They usually went for "it would be too hard for you" but I think they simply like to keep their secrets and I am not THAT curious
