...Why?
Time constraints? Too many languages at once? Just don't like it? Feel apathetic about it?
Even though I have a Chinese roommate, I don't feel inclined to learn Mandarin: I'm not a huge fan of how it sounds, and learning all of those characters looks like a huge mountain to climb.
Italian, Japanese and German are on my list of next languages to tackle, but first I'll take the Tarvos approach and focus on one at a time, in this case, French.
Turkish and Persian look really interesting--I can see myself enjoying the cultures and the history...I'm not sure if I can make them "useful". Perhaps later they will move up on the list.
Spanish would be useful...I just lost enthusiasm for it. I tried really hard to like it so I can become fluent and use it, but having family and myself pushing me to learn it killed my enthusiasm.
Lastly, Arabic has been on my mind lately...But I don't have the passion to learn it. When I compare it to my interest in learning Japanese, and both languages are considered the hardest to learn for English natives, I can see myself climbing the difficult mountain of Japanese fluency, but not the Arabic one at this point.

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
I'm not learning Japanese, because, while it's a language I'd like to know, I've been repeatedly defeated by the kanji, and don't see myself ever overcoming that aspect without some kind of special motivation.
Even though there are plenty of native Russian speakers where I live, and the language is otherwise interesting, I'm not learning Russian, because, possibly due to bad luck, most of the Russians I've ever gotten to know in real life have had rather abrasive personalities.

I'm Not Learning Ayapaneco Because ... the last two fluent speakers of the language are reportedly not speaking with each other and frankly, I don't want to get caught in the middle of that.

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
I'm going to steer away from my answers on the earlier thread on this topic.
Most languages I find interesting: My rule for my own sanity (literal sanity) is that I won't learn a language unless I want to go to a area where it is used on an administrative level. I'm currently breaking this rule with Japanese but, as I've said in my log, I'm being super low key about Japanese.
ASL: I will not learn a sign language without being in an in person class. Additionally if I'm taking a class I need to, for my own edification and general respect, be speaking it with Deaf and/or L1 speakers on a semi regular basis. I talked in a recent post about being very tempted to take ASL classes, and I might do so in the Fall, but given the nature of the language and Deaf culture I'm not willing to learn any sign language in isolation (so at home). The only exception were to be if I was living with a Deaf person but even then I would force myself to go to meetings so I could use it with people who are Deaf.

"The name Ayapaneco is an imposition by outsiders, and Segovia and Velazquez call their language Nuumte Oote, which means the True Voice. They speak different versions of this truth and tend to disagree over details, which doesn't help their relationship. The dictionary, which is due out later this year, will contain both versions."

Re: I'm Not Learning ____ Language Because...
Curious to learn more about Ayapaneco, I went to wikipedia. Turns out, the story isn't quite as it has been portrayed in the popular media. Looking closer at the citations, I found this piece, which tells somewhat different story.
