Russian has been heavily influenced by the Church Slavonic language (a liturgical language of the Orthodox Church), the older form of which (Old Church Slavonic) has an alternative name "Old Bulgarian".
When I look at the Bulgarian text in the Bulgarian Wikipedia, for example, I see lots of familiar roots, but the grammar (word endings) is completely opaque.
