Language identification

Postby yyy » Mon Aug 28, 2017 6:35 pm

Hello, language learners.

I recently bought a doorbell that came with a distinct tone.
Something is uttered in a foreign language I cannot identify.
Since we have people from all over the world here on the forum, I wondered if somebody would be able to recognize which language this is and what is being said.

The curiosity is killing me, so any help towards an answer is greatly appreciated.

Have a nice week,
yyy

It's Urdu. It means "Hello" in Urdu.

It also means a formal "hello" in Arabic though.

It's Arabic. You can clearly hear the second ا in السلام is pronounced [æ] (in Urdu alif can't be pronounced [æ], /æ/ is a marginal phoneme used in English loanwords, whereas in Arabic [æ] is an allophone of /a/) and the ع in علیکم is [ʕ] (pharyngeal consonants do not exist in any Indo-Aryan language that I'm aware of; they're more typically Semitic). Also in Urdu we tend to eliminate the second short "a" and the short "u" in assalaamu (making it sound like aslaam, or even slaam).
