No new languages for 2017 since I added Latin to the mix this year, however I would like to finish the Latin mooc course (which is in Italian). I'm dabbling in Ancient Greek alphabet for fun and as a supplement to the Latin but it's not likely that I will ever learn Greek since European Portuguese and German are higher priorities for me to return to in the future (possibly 2018 & 2019, respectively).

New goals: Spend more time on Thai in preparation of my upcoming trip there & be able to read and understand the Latin Aesop book
Old goals: Continue on more regularly with the Thai podcasts and complete the Italian Intermediate & Advanced moocs so I can continue to work on any problem areas. I will easily make my 1/2 Thai Film SC and double Italian Film SC but will need to step up the reading pace if I'm to complete those goals

Levels I wish to achieve:
Italian: C1 equivalent
Thai: low intermediate (I am fine with basic conversation)
Latin: intermediate reading level

I have no intention of measuring these levels or taking any tests. If I can do simple things like order my food in Thai or do a little shopping while I'm there I will be content. Italian will take care of itself with regular italki sessions and reading.

Russian:

I just want to do a lot of listening-reading and build my vocabulary and listening comprehension.

2017 goals:
known words: 8736 -> 15000
words read: 1.2 million -> 2.0 million

Italian:

I'm starting Italian in 2017 as a side project to Russian. I'm not 100% sure I'll stick with it. I'd like to do an experiment to see how far I can get using only LingQ ... no textbooks, no flash cards, nothing else. Just passively soaking up the language through reading and listening.

2017 goals:
known words: 149 -> 3000
words read: 4702 -> 250000

What are your New Year's resolutions for 2017?

To make 2017 my most consistent year of French learning.

To eat healthier.

To be more efficient with my time.

To exercise more consistently.

To sleep more regularly.

smallwhite wrote:What new languages do you want to start?

I want to start more than one, but I won't start any, I'll just stick to French for all of 2017.

smallwhite wrote:Which old languages do you want to finish?

None.

smallwhite wrote:What new goals will you set? Which old goals from last year will you carry forward?

Like last year, and like rlnv, I'm aiming for at least 3 hours per day of French on average. 1200 hours of French might be a nice goal. In 2017 I will try to be much more consistent and use much more in the way of native materials, with listening and reading the main focus areas.

smallwhite wrote:What level do you want to achieve? How will you measure it?

First B2 then C1 or C2. Although I could already be B2 and at a stretch C1 in perhaps one area, I'm aiming to get 'evidence' via the DELF/DALF exams.

To get my French to a B-level, somewhere (I'm not sure if B2 is feasible for me). I'm not if I'll test for it: I might go for equivalent. I'm picturing it as knowing as much French in a year as I studied Spanish for three years in high school, so at least I have an idea.

I'd like to take and pass JLPT N3 for Japanese language, and reach somewhere between B1 and B2 in that language.

I also want to continue improving my English, but it isn't something that I will study, just trying to do a lot of things in this language to keep it sharp :)

I'd like to really start to focus on Spanish, and get it to B1.

By the end of the year, I wish to start French which is the next one on my list. Who knows :lol:

I hope to not be exhausted enough in order to get further in any of my languages, however that works out.

French:
Just do what I'm doing. Get through some Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Henri Bergson. Read more lesser known works by famous French writers like Ninety three by Hugo. Watch more movies, get more exposure to Quebecois speech. Would like to get as close to native as I can get

Italian:
Get to a C2 level, familiarize myself with Romanesco more. Maybe learn a regional language like Venetian or Piedmontese

German:
Definitely aiming for around a C1. Would like to be able to read complex German philosophy and psychology by people like Freud, Heidegger, Hegel, Kant. Learn Alsacian German + get some familiarity with Swiss German

Russian:
Being able to keep up with news programs and read some sort of literature without a dictionary would be fantastic. Anything above that would be a plus. I'm going to be putting a lot of focus on German and Russian this year so maybe I can make something happen

I would also like to dive into some Hebrew, Polish, and Japanese at some point.

Next year I want to get my spanish to a solid intermediate level, which means I want to be able to communicate effectively and without too much problems with spanish speaking people. In october I should have opportunities to test this :mrgreen: .

My plans are:
- using texts and workbooks intensively to improve and grow my vocabulary
- listening to podcasts and audiocourses to improve my listening comprehension
- reading more books (both spanish and english), this year I neglected my books, my sub is enormous
- working on grammar topics with my collection of excercise books (Paso a paso, Practise makes Perfect)
- going on with Skype lessons (but then with solid preparation and reviewing)

I want to spend at least one hour a day actively on learning spanish and some more or less active time (one to three hours) with listening when commuting or walking the dog, or reading in breaks.

What new languages do you want to start? Which old languages do you want to finish?
What new goals will you set? Which old goals from last year will you carry forward?
What level do you want to achieve? How will you measure it?

By September 15, I want to have reached a level roughly equivalent to B2 in Korean, as being documented in my log "Korean - from scratch to B2 in one year". In addition to the metrics I'm tracking, I will offer some proof of my level by making videos.
As for my other languages, I just want to maintain them.
