The five permanent members of the UN are France, the UK, the US, Russia and China... aka the "we won the war" club (as some have already alluded to). That explains 4 of the 5 languages. Spanish has a continent, Arabic has oil. Africa isn't economically powerful, and it would be very politically difficult to choose one regional lingua franca over another anyway. I see only three possible paths: an EU-style "all member state official languages" policy; maintain the status quo; English only. None of the permanent members would go for the first, and neither France nor Russia would go with the third, and I reckon China would be secretly OK with it but would refuse in order to look tough. That means the status quo is the only real option.

Remove none. Add Japanese, which would also give Koreans the option to use a language similar to their own (whether they would take advantage of that opportunity is another question), Portuguese and Indonesian because they are huge, Persian for the three Iranian speaking countries (one of which is a major regional power), Turkish to give the vast Turkic peoples some representation, Hindi for those 1.5 billion Indo-Aryan speakers, and German since it's the main language of Mitteleuropa. That makes 13 languages. A lot, but not insanely so. It gives the vast majority of countries the option to use either their official language or a language closely related to it.

Drop all the languages they use now and let them use sign language instead. Or Esperanto. Or Quenya (sounds nicer than Klingon).

I'd remove Russian, because... what the heck is it doing there? The USSR is no more, WW2 ended long ago, and now, who is Russian for? Like, for Russians themselves and a bunch of peoples in neighbouring countries who still speak it coz they've got used to it? Makes no sense.

I'd add Persian. I get the feeling German wouldn't be that crucial to add since they all speak perfect English anyway.

Russian is on the list because it was among the winners of the 2. world war. Well, it is also spoken by a lot of people, including some in countries that have been under Sovjet rule, but reason no. 1 is probably the more important of the two.

nope ;)
I like Chung's and Expugnator's suggestions :) For me the ones that are missing are Portuguese and Hindi/Urdu, but idk how to incorporate them in a sensible way.
