Video, some South African languages click on: P, C, X, Q

Postby DaveAgain » Fri Jan 27, 2023 9:44 am

Many of the languages spoken by the Nguni people of southern Africa as well as the San people have a range of click sounds.

In this video, Sakhile Dube from St Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, demonstrates how these click sounds are pronounced in the Zulu language.

Sakhile Dube had the most soothing voice ever! He also has some great videos talking about different animals at the park.

Note that p is not technically a click, it is an ejective. The difference is that clicks are created by sucking air while ejectives are created by stopping your breath. There are other ejectives in the Nguni languages as well, not just p.
