MacOS: Recording single channel conversation

Postby Flickserve » Tue Nov 22, 2022 1:53 am

I’m recently started using MacOS (M1 mac) and have online lessons over Skype.

Sometimes I like to voice record lessons.

What I would like is to have the function of a left or right (or both) channel recording that solely records the teachers voice. My voice doesn’t record and therefore during the times that I am speaking, the recording is silent.

This makes it very efficient to skip to the parts of the lesson that I am interested in reviewing. I am not interested in listening to my own speaking and it takes up time to filter out and remove.

I tried the Skype recording feature but it gave me the video conversation.

Any suggestions for apps that might have this feature?

I don't know about 3rd party apps for Skype. But I know on Zoom there is an option to record each participant on a separate audio file. That's no help if you're wedded to Skype for whatever reason but it's possibly an option.

I should have mentioned that the teacher is in mainland China. Some websites are saying Zoom is problematic for users there but I will look further into it.

Audacity?

You can select the device you want to record from, and I don't know about Mac OS, but in Windows you can select "Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input", and record the output of the computer.

It shouldn't record your voice over microphone.
