Re: What Triggers Your Wanderlust?
Well, if I to some extent can understand a language or dialect then it would be foolish not to use random occasions that might occur (as long as those activities don't consume too much of my time), but I draw a clear dividing line between these ephemeral language experiences and real language study.

Re: What Triggers Your Wanderlust?
For me its imagining hypothetical future work scenarios or holidays where I would use the language extensively.
I've currently got a bad case of the latter, must stop.

I usually imagine myself going to places where this language is spoken, living there and being able to use the language everyday.

For me, it's the possibility of doing something with a language that may prove useful for other people. For example I had wanderlust for Ge'ez after noticing there's no English online dictionary for it, and even Wiktionary's coverage is abysmal...

Re: What Triggers Your Wanderlust?
YouTube video recommendations have led me "astray" many times ! Today I saw a thumbnail for a video in either Arabic or Persian even though I haven't watched any Arabic or Persian videos in years, but I think I resisted....for a while anyway . Curiosity about music from various countries, Omniglot and the occasional Wikipedia article can also encourage my wanderlust.

Seeing people talk about their multiple second languages or their ancestral languages. Also classy footage of beautiful cities in Europe, stuff like that.

Hearing languages that sound awesome. That's what draws me at first.
I'll get to you some day, Russian, I promise!

Re: What Triggers Your Wanderlust?
My wanderlust just got triggered pretty badly. I feel like I’m plateauing in Hebrew, but I’ve been almost studying it for four years. I think it makes sense for me to start a new language now. It doesn’t seem like studying other languages will take away from time studying Hebrew anymore.

I've been having fun just listening to music from Israel aand knowing the most basic terms to search up even more music. But one day soon I will return to Hebrew, because I want to get really good at reading/writing it.
