I can remember being upset that Duolingo was unfairly punishing me for what I thought were correct answers, then finally looking up the difference between woman vs women and being embarrassed when I discovered I was a fool, and that Duolingo was actually helping me.
This was a long time ago, but I was in University, so, that was a late grammar lesson for me.
I have vague memories of reading articles about English grammar when I first started learning Portuguese.
