King Charles III speaks Welsh on first visit to Wales

Postby Cenwalh » Fri Sep 16, 2022 2:02 pm

The UK's (amongst other places) new monarch just delivered a speech in Welsh to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament) on his first visit to Wales as monarch. I remember seeing he'd picked a bit up for his investiture as Prince of Wales on the Netflix series The Crown as I'm far too young to remember the real thing, but I don't think I've heard of him attempting Welsh otherwise. I wonder if any Welsh speakers/learners could tell us what his pronunciation is like

What world leaders do you know of who have tried their hand at speaking a minority language, even if entirely scripted?

I believe de Gaulle made quite a rousing speech in Québec. :D

King Charles a world leader? I hate to bring this up, but the British empire is dissolved.

Here's former Norwegian prime minister speaking Saami. Clearly she never studied the language, it's entirely scripted: https://youtu.be/YtdhKuBiBV4?t=10

Collins dictionary definition

A world leader is someone who is the leader of a country, especially an economically powerful country.

King Charles is the Head of State for the United Kingdom, so yes, he is considered a world leader.

Edit: I forgot, he is Head of State for these countries as well. (HoS for 3 of the top 15 economies in the world)

Not a world leader by any measure, but Montreal MP Mark Miller made a short speech in Mohawk in the House of Commons a few years ago.

Liberal MP Marc Miller already made history two years ago when he gave the first speech in the House of Commons in Mohawk.

The Montreal-area MP is bilingual in English and French but has previously said in a 2017 interview with CBC News that he wanted to “put his money where his mouth is” after often encouraging non-francophone MPs to try learning French during their time in office.

He decided if anglophone MPs could make time to learn another language while serving, he could learn another language too and began taking Mohawk lessons two years ago.

Despite strong family heritage, I sadly cannot speak Welsh.

I do believe Prince William has made a point of studying Welsh so that he can give a speech in his investiture ceremony, much like his father. Most of the Royal Family speak one or two foreign languages (Prince Philip probably spoke the most given his complex history.)

They still say vacuous things though, no matter which language they use.

That's nice and all, but have you heard Le Général reciting a poem in Breton? 8-)

I hope he's not the leader of those countries and also not of the UK. Was thinking that democracy was an idea that is catching on. But it's nice that he's learned Welsh. Maybe he can join our forum.
