This came to me via Twitter today: ‘First modern novel – oldest language’: Sanskrit translation of Don Quixote rescued from oblivion- from the Guardian via the Cervantes Institute.
I would've been more impressed if the translation were directly from Medieval Spanish... but... maybe that's to be left for another day.

Re: Don Quixote in Sanskrit
This reminds me that at least part of it was also translated into Irish. It's interesting what languages these things got translated into!

Re: Don Quixote in Sanskrit
Very interesting. I don't think this book is even available in Latin. Not yet.
Pedantic note: Don Quixote isn't in medieval Spanish ~ Old Spanish, but early modern Spanish, at least under the usual meanings of the labels.

Re: Don Quixote in Sanskrit
Actually there is a Latin translation by Antonio Peral Torres: Dominus Quixotus a Manica, Centro de Estudios Cervantinos, 1998. You can read some comments about it at Textkit.Querneus wrote:Very interesting. I don't think this book is even available in Latin. Not yet.
There is also a version in Macaronic Latin by Ignatius Calvus (1922).

Re: Don Quixote in Sanskrit
What can I say, that's fantastic to hear. I only knew of the macaronic translation. And the Latin does seem simple without complicated periods in that excerpt. The title seems to be Dominus Quixotus a Manica btw.

Even more pedantic note: Don Quixote often speaks in a very archaic way, imitating the language of the books he read before he went mad, so it’s not all in early modern Spanish.

Re: Don Quixote in Sanskrit
When I clicked on this link I wasn't expecting to find a 5 hours Sanskrit audiobook just freely available for download. Wasn't expecting this to be a resource I might actually use some day, but its hard to pass up free audiobooks. Just hope they continue to do audio recordings for future translations.
