I have a difference average for different target languages. So my answer is the average of the average.

You can give the total number and specify in the comments, if you will. For instance, I usually aim at around 40 book per year across all languages I can read (English, German, and French).

I said > 40 because I'm pretty sure I read more than 40 Italian books the last two years though it's much lower this year since I'm focusing on reading Portuguese instead. There's still five more months left so it will probably still end up being that between everything (including the Italian mixed with other romance languages and a single German book).

Re: How many books in your target language do you read on average per year?
I went for 20-30 and it may be that it possibly falls into 10-20. Lack of time is the biggest factor. Also I have to share it with other kinds of reading: articles in newspapers/magazines (and the magazines entirely); internet reading.
'Books' encompasses fiction and non-fiction and I'd say I read more novels these days than non-fiction. I read as many books in English as all the target languages. More French novels than Dutch novels, but more non-fiction in Dutch because I have to read for functional reasons. I read about equal non-fiction/novels in German, but it leans towards fiction. In Spanish I'm trying to balance it, but I'm not really advanced enough to meaningfully measure it.

Re: How many books in your target language do you read on average per year?
If I count English as a target language (why shouldn't I?), there were 65 books on my list in 2020, 30 in 2018 (for some reason 2019 is missing), 30 in 2017...

Re: How many books in your target language do you read on average per year?
I think the most I managed in a year was 18, but that was an exceptional year, usually it's a lot less. I'm quite a slow reader anyway (including in my native English). I don't have any specific difficulty reading, I think I just like to digest things slowly. Also, I tend to start a lot more books than I finish. And after reading a particularly good book, I'd rather keep it in mind for a while instead of jumping straight into the next one. So I probably finish around 1 book every 2-3 months, usually in English or German.

They ought to count. I read a lot of comics, which are a gold mine for words and slang phrases.
