I couldn't answer because I like both cats and dogs. Cats because they look after themselves, dogs because of their companionship and loyalty.

I wonder which is a better companion for language learning? I currently like to walk the dog and listen to a podcast or audiobook. On the other hand, it's more difficult to make arrangements for a dog to be looked after when you want to travel. At the end of the day, cats win the competition for language companion simply on the basis of the old Irish poem about Pangur Ban:
I and Pangur Bán my cat,
‘Tis a like task we are at:
Hunting mice is his delight,
Hunting words I sit all night.

And the following (I believe) is the original:
Messe [ocus] Pangur bán,
cechtar nathar fria saindán;
bíth a menma-sam fri seilgg,
mu menma céin im saincheirdd

Well, I talk to my dog in Italian for practice, and he never just gets up and walks away in disgust like a cat would.

I go for dogs. I have four.

I like that my dogs understand multiple languages, German for commands, English for everyday talk, and Spanish when it is time to play with them and give them some love.

My cat does not care what language I talk to her; she ignores me most of the time. My theory is that she understands everything we say and do, but she pretends she does not understand strategically to her advantage.

I voted for dogs even though I've never had any pets. I don't know why this is but most dogs that I meet seem to love me and will follow me anywhere if allowed to do so.

I also couldn't vote as I'm both. And Balthazar (grey one) was looking at me funny as I was hovering over "dog person."

My dog was like a cat and my cat was like a dog, so I can’t really answer the question?

My favourite is big hamsters / small guinea pigs.

I'm a cat person, but I do still like dogs quite a lot. I just like cats more.

My sister (and consequently also my mother) had a cat named "Humle" ('hop'), but it was murdered by the veterinarian. I am happy not to own any animals myself, but I am an avid zoo visitor - that's like a dictionary of animals, and other people have to feed the critters and remove the dung.

By the way, in Danish we don't say that it rains cats and dogs - we say that it rains "skomagerdrenge" (shoemaker's boys/apprentices), heaven knows why...

I voted for dogs but actually I am a rabbit person. We’ve currently got two of them. They are great, they make no noise, they clean themselves and are happy with a bit of lettuce and hay.
