Who's your favorite YouTube polyglot?

Postby oho » Sun Dec 13, 2020 5:29 pm

Mine is Lindie Botes. Modest, introspective plus notebook galore.

Sorry if this was already asked, I suspect it's not the most original question, but couldn't find anything similar anywhere.

Richard Simcott. Because I know him and he's a cool frood. But I like Alex Rawlings too. I know Luca as well. I've also met Steve and Benny a long time ago, both of them are cool too.

I like Luca, I consider his explanations are very carefully prepared, very focused, and I like the english he uses.

I also like some of the conferences I've seen by Lýdia Machova and the Kris Broholm's podcast.

And I Like myself so much!!

Call me a forum dinosaur, but the only one I'm watching with maintained interest since 2006/2007 is Professor Arguelles. I have mentioned others in another thread.

There are more polyglots whose channels I subscribe to (Gareth Popkins is one of them).

Polyglot rock stars give me nothing. I'm allergic to their TV preacher like stage presence. (I won't mention any names.)

I agree. I have not followed polyglots that much, so I have I can't compare them all, but a while back I watched a series of Luca Lamperiello videos and have continued to watch some others occasionally, and I was quite impressed with his manner, explanations and logic in the videos.

I also find Professor Arguelles quite interesting, in particular his monastic-like existence in South Korea in the past when he learned numerous languages over several years, as well as his family environment (homeschooling, speaking several languages with his children, which I do myself).

I just watched this video right through. A well presented talk on polyglots with relation to how others can do the same as polyglots to learn languages. From what I can gauge from this video, Lýdia's talks throughout Slovakia on the same topic seem to be a great idea, since she's not promoting any one program or method, but an overall approach inclusive of all methods, as we all do learn using methods and content that we like to engage with. Quite motivational.

I also like the fact that she learns languages for fun - I mean that she does something else for a living and languages are just one of her hobbies. My situation is similar and because of that, it's somehow easier for me to relate to her.

I'm not sure you can call them "polyglots" (A polyglot - a guy tells you he knows twenty-four languages and you believe him), but I like these two guys. One is a Japanese boy from Hokkaido, and the other a Russian from Приднестровье.
They do know the language (Polish) they had taught themselves and prove it in their really interesting vlogs.
Their channels have one hundred thousand subscribes each. Quite a feat, I must say.

2. Ignacy z Japonii

There's another one I forgot to mention: bald and bankrupt (2.44M subscribers).
He uses his broken Russian and Hindi to get in touch with native babushkas. A tough guy. A marvel to behold.

Mine as well. :) I like how she shares her experiences with language learning without bragging or being patronizing. There are way too many Youtube videos of the kind "look, I'm awesome and today I'm gonna show you how you can become (nearly) as awesome as me". I wonder what these people are trying to compensate for.

OMG thank you--I love all those notebooks! Only now I'm tempted to post some of her videos over in the notebooks thread...

I appreciate the modest/introspective aspect of her videos too.

I don't really like choosing favourites of anything, partly because these things are fluid, but the Prof is kind of like Elvis: The King. And much more than a youtube Polyglot, of course.

And I have a very high regard for Anthony Lauder, who I don't think even regards himself as a polyglot. He's an excellent teacher / communicator, however.

There are other good ones of course.

Polyglot rock stars give me nothing.

 And I likened Professor Arguelles to Elvis.... but anyway, thankfully the Professor is still with us, and long may that continue.
