No brainer for me. French Polynesia and it's the reason I started learning French after a trip there.

I have just realised that I mis-read the original question. I thought we were being asked to choose somewhere to go and live for the rest of our lives and never leave it.

So, we still live where we are now, but we can travel to this chosen place as often as, and for as long as, we like, and take up residence there if we like (but then presumably not come back to our original country of residence?)

Anyway, it's a tough one, obviously, but I think it would have to be Norway.

I suppose I wouldn't get fed up of the language because there are all those dialects to learn.

Since I'm going to be spending so much time in northern latitudes, and can no longer escape to the Canaries for my dose of winter sun, I guess I'd be spending more time on the British south coast or maybe the Scillies, to get as far south as possible, from time to time.

Would I be allowed to go to Northern Ireland? (It's not far south, but it's a change of scene). And the same language (well, kind of.... ).

Oy vey! How does one decide?

Stability, language-interest, food, beach.

Croatia. Hands down.

You're not a C1 (or B1 or whatever) if you haven't tested.

I'd probably go for Switzerland as well just on the strength of language availability, but of the two times I've been there I found Switzerland a bit dull. Perhaps being there for a longer period would change that.

If not then it would be Réunion. I could learn Réunion Creole, where all the nouns but a few are masculine. Like French, but sensible. :)

Lots of European countries in this thread. I too would put countries such as Italy, Ireland, and Spain near the top of my list. But I'm going to say Mexico. I don't think I'd ever get tired of the food, the people, the landscapes. Plus it would finally give me an excuse to learn Spanish.

If I wasn't American I would say the US. We have the world's most diverse range in climates, everything from tropical to high-arctic. Since I already live here, I would say Brazil. It's also hugely diverse in its culinary and musical traditions. Brazil has some of the best beaches in the world, so you can lay out in a speedo and sip four caipirinhas in the snow-white sand. There are waterfalls, savannas, and dense rain forest. There are dozens of cultures, and each state is so different you get the feeling that you're entering an entirely different place when going one state over. It's nothing like Europe, where one city could be interchanged for any of the others - large river, nightlife district, brutalist apartment blocks, kebab shop, church, old castle, railway station, rinse and repeat.
