Once you get around to an intermediate level I think things should start falling in order. Figuring out your goals in Japanese can also possibly lighten the load. If you want to use it for the reasons that I assume many people learn it ie anime and manga, then it would be quite possible for you to lighten the load. You won't need to necessarily know finer grammar points nor honorifics, counters, most kanji, etc for this so you could put those off until later. Yes, Japanese is a difficult language but there are and have been throughout centuries Europeans who have mastered it. You're going to be in it for the long run. I would recommend searching out as many beginner graded readers as you can. I personally went through most of Clay/Yumi Boutwell's books as well as a few others in the Kindle Store.

Kanji are still helpful for reading signs and other onscreen writing when watching anime. I certainly wish I could read the writing.
