I have no method I just follow my guts since I'm an experienced language learner. But basically I learn words by connecting them phonetically to words I already know (in any of my languages) and creating mental connections. Apart from it I expose myself to the language depending on my level. E.g. since my Swedish is at a C-ish level I'm used to reading around 20 minutes per day listening to the audio at the same time. Then I put words (with the sentences I found them in) I looked up from my Kindle into Anki. For Japanese these are only short audio clips from some podcast and a lot of SRS work.
