That's a good idea. I might try that for Japanese.


You should. Writing the kana over and over again helps but I felt like I was getting better at writing when I was actually writing sentences. Also if you going to write kanji, I would strongly recommend that you learn kanji radicals first. Radicals are like the pieces that make up most kanjis. Learning to write 204 of those is better than learning 2000 individual kanji, imo.

I'm using a vocabulary notebook for my Japanese. It is actually a pretty small notebook, which I put in my bag and take with me anywhere I go to. What I do is looking at it while in train or bus to work for example.
