When you have 20 languages you want to learn in this lifetime, and then you hear someone speaking in one you've never heard before, and suddenly all your old plans are trash.

... When you're excitedly showing your friend your new copy of the Carmina Bruana, only to get sidetracked by criticizing the translation, and end up re-paraphrasing it on the spot.

... When you've bought 5 books in Latin, two in Greek, three in French, and one in Occitan since the term began. (I should not be left unsupervised around bookstores.)

When you have an even harder time resisting an online game, cause you just meet Italian speaking people there, who don't hesitate to talk to you in Italian instead of English, even though they know you're native of neither! :-D

When you have 4 language conversation events you could go to, but they're all hosted the same night, and you can't decide, because you want to go to ALL OF THEM.

When you constantly make lists of languages you want to learn, and constantly revise it. I'm realistic and I don't think I'll learn more than two or three, but it is probably an unhealthy obsession.

When you watch the Young Indiana Jones language duel scene and decide to add Welsh to your list just so you can beat a fictional character.

Also, you wonder why people find the line "Italian is easy to learn when you speak Spanish and French" to be amusing.

When you wake up from general anaesthetic and the first thing you decide to do is to talk to the nurse in Spanish. And when you're left alone in the room, you decide to start monologuing in Spanish about the advantages and disadvantages of publicly-funded healthcare.

...when you're at work and bump into one of the few polyglots in town, chat about Esperanto/Dutch/Irish (Modern and Old)/Mandarin, brush over some of the main differences in phonology between Mandarin and Cantonese, and after five minutes you get the comment: "You should give lectures during next Polyglot Gathering!". Yeah, right...
