In graduate school in a language-related subject in California, it's not uncommon at all for both kinds of IPA to be happening simultaneously.

... when you're sure you can't think in your TL after a month of studies, but upon seeing a number, name it in that TL before any other language comes to your mind.

When in a previous post you make a reference to Star Wars while discussing Star Trek...and then you decide to watch Krieg der Sterne and Das Imperium schlägt zurück. And then you get a bunch of Star Wars books in German for your Kindle. And you've never been a huge Star Wars fan, but these are in German!
And then you listen to a seven hour long Star Wars podcast. In German.
Seven hours.

When you're reading job descriptions and you start translating the requirements into your L2 in your head
Also, when you're writing a cover letter (in English) and you start with "Estimados señores" (or your L2 equivalent)...

When you are tired of studying for language unrelated exam and start daydreaming how cool it would be to switch the exam to Spanish. Then you start guessing which of the possible examinators are likely to know Spanish.

You quit your job so you can spend all your free-time learning languages, but then go back to work after six months so you can buy more Assimil and Linguaphone books
