Links to two Guardian articles on the recent demise of Finland's weekly Latin news programme.

That there was such a thing is pretty cool but its imminent demise won't have a major impact on my life - although Latin is definitely on my list of languages to learn in due course, given my pace of learning this programming would have only been useful for me if it had continued to, by my estimate, 2087.

You can still listen to the archives, with transcript!
I speak neither Latin nor Finnish, but it certainly seems to me that there is a heavy Finnish accent going on with this Latin. Particularly in the /l/ consonant. Can anybody confirm?

I think so too.
I often hear Finnish, or Swedish being spoken with a finnish accent, so I'm used to the sound of it, and this Latin sounded quite similar. Very understandable though, as far as my much-more-than-half-forgotten Latin from my school days allows me to judge.

I think this "demise" is more about the state of government-sponsored media, especially, radio, than about Latin. New media like Youtube podcasts on the one hand, and resurrection of old ones (thousands upon thousands of scanned books in Latin) give us a lot more opportunities to study and enjoy this beautiful language.

Definitely Finnish. It took me one second to notice the prosody and the vowel quality.

What's next, dropping Swedish? Just like they brag about dropping Nynorsk in Norway.
Soon we can expect Irish being dropped in Ireland and Welsh in Wales...
