You might also look at the Endangered Language site to check what is listed.
Often, there are references and authors. Perhaps reach out to a specific person working with a local language.

I'd probably start by volunteering with one of the NAICOB events to get a feel for the local community and go from there. The longer standing volunteer coordinators etc. are probably more in tune with who is around, who speaks what, who is interested in preserving and sharing their language, etc. Since your interest is strictly local and the number of potential partners is limited, I would let the entirety of the decision rest on "fate."
