Brazilian Portuguese

João sem-braços - John without arms - Useless or lazy person

A cobra vai fumar - The snake will smoke - The situation's getting serious

Pode tirar o cavalinho da chuva - You can take the little horse out of the rain - Don't even think about it, it's never going to happen

Manô do ceu - Dude from the sky - Oh my god

A preço de banana - The price of a banana - Something very cheap

O mar não está para peixe - The sea is not good for the fish - When a person is having bad luck in a specific situation

Quem é você na fila do pão? - Who are you in the bread line? - Questioning someone's authority on a subject

Vai catar coquinho - Go pick up little coconuts - Leave me alone

Engolir sapo - Swallow a toad - Bite your tongue and listen even if you disagree

Cutucar a onça com vara curta - Poke a jaguar with a little stick - The effects of your teasing can be dangerous

Mamão com açúcar - Papaya with sugar - Piece of cake

schwarzfahren/zwartrijden - riding black - To ride a train without paying. I wish we had a term for this in English, but I suppose we don't need one since we don't have public transportation to begin with.

I can't think of many idioms offhand, but I can think of a number of foreign language puns I've seen that don't translate to English.

My favorite Japanese idiom

猫をかぶる - to wear a cat on your head - to act friendly or innocent, hiding your true nature.


(Lit: Huh? So it's not wearing a cat on its head?)

For any English learners here, you could just watch Catchphrase. Granted they are not all idioms, but the vast majority are. You also will not get the explanation for them, so I guess it is also a good comprehension exercise as you would have to hear it correctly in order to be able to search for it.
I could not find an equivalent show in any other languages. I would love something like this for German.

For German, I quite like "Der Kern des Pudels" Which is roughly the same as "The heart of the matter" but literally the core of the poodle. This also has further references as I believe it was derived from Faust.
