Re: British dialect placement quiz
I think the irish have an origin legend that says they come from Troy. Is that near Croatia?

Re: British dialect placement quiz
I answered how I actually speak and it couldn't narrow me down further than the entirety of Scotland. I answered how I might sometimes speak when very drunk 20 years ago and it did a bit better (but still offered the whole western lowlands of Scotland as possibilities). I guess that's what happens when you move about so much as a kid that you went to 9 different schools all over Scotland and England.
I guess I talk funny.

Re: British dialect placement quiz
This is interesting. Back in the HTLAL days, there was a quiz on Canada/USA accents - I got Philadelphia (or thereabouts). A year ago, there was a global English quiz, according to which I spoke Ebonics one day, and UK English another day (I took the test twice). Now, when it's about Ireland/UK, I answer as honestly as always, and like FyrsteSumarenINoreg I'm not "from around here" (yeah, at least they got that one right), but the hottest spot on the map is... Luton.

I did this one just now and, as you might expect from MIT, it was pretty accurate. Not sure where Finnish came from, though.
Our top three guesses for your English dialect:
1. Scottish (UK)
2. Australian
3. English (England)
Our top three guesses for your native (first) language:
1. English
2. Finnish
3. German

It appears that Cambridgeshire is a county in Zimbabwe!

Re: British dialect placement quiz
I got "way off", but with slightly hotter colours for London. As I lived there for five years, that is fair enough I guess.
