Why learn Latin?

I had four semesters of Latin during my studies, and I noticed that it helped me in German a lot. I was able to understand the rules of translating texts - finding verb and deconstructing its form, then finding the corresponding noun and finally translating everything else. But I had an excellent teacher, so I am not sure if it was her merit or Latin's
