Hi there,

My name is Emrys (nickname) and I'm from Romania. I decided to join this forum today after seeing it for 5 minutes. I love learning languages and this is the best place for me to discover resources and talk to people from around the world who are also polyglots. This one and Discord of course. My native language is Romanian and right now I'm trying to learn French (reviving it), Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese (beginner for all three). I took the TOEFL iBT for B2 a decade ago and since then I have read books in English quite a lot, but I can't speak properly yet. I haven't actively studied a foreign language in a while, but I'm willing to make progress in all the languages I'm interested in; this is one of the reasons I joined this forum. Nice to meet y'all! ^^

Hi! I just found this forum about an hour ago after searching for something I was missing in my language learning journey - community.

I'm from the US but have been studying various languages for years. Unfortunately, I don't give most a chance besides the basics, either because it's not keeping my attention or I get distracted by something else. I took French in school for 6 years (I can still understand and read some, but I haven't actively studied it in close to 20 years), I studied Mandarin on and off for 3 years (I can read and understand the basics, but that's it), Korean for a year and a half, and most recently, Norwegian for about a year and a half.

I started Norwegian because I was going on a "bucket list" trip with my mom last year and wanted to learn a little bit before we went. When I got there however, I fell in love. I have been studying it since and have another trip booked for next year. Currently I'm around a B2, as I'm able to listen to podcasts and read articles about more complex topics. It's easily my favorite part of my day, I look forward to getting off of work for this reason (and just getting out of work in general).

There are so many languages I want to explore (Catalan, Spanish, Turkish), but Norwegian has my attention for now. Nice to meet you all!

Hello. I'm a native Portuguese speaker from Brazil, and I've been lurking for some days and decided to join the forum. The community feeling, the insightful discussions and personal learning logs I've read really that cought my eye and made me wanting to be part of it.

While my English is somewhat proficient, I also hold B2 certifications in Spanish and German. However, my skills in these languages have become rusty due to lack of practice. I studied German during an exchange program almost ten years ago and haven't used it much since. As for Spanish, I learned it while working with the Mexican branch of my company but was relocated and haven't used it regularly either.

Currently, I'm embarking on a new language learning adventure with Swedish. It's a hobby that I've grown quite fond of, but I also see potential professional benefits in the future.

I'm excited to be part of this forum and look forward to interacting with all of you.

Hello from Jane in London

Postby Jane235 » Sun Sep 15, 2024 9:24 am

Hi, I'm Jane, live in London, currently updating my German knowledge to try and keep my brain active. I studied German at school (A-level) and as a subsidiary subject at University (degree was in French Studies), but this was a very long time ago. I have a relatively high level in reading ability (maybe B2-C1?) but much lower in speaking and listening, so I'm currently concentrating on listening and vocab enrichment, & also trying to kill several birds with one stone with the L-R method using 'The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair' and its German translation and audiobook. I've already found lots of learning tips on this forum, so many thanks!

Hi everyone, my name is Oliver, and I'm from Germany. After I had finished the German equivalent of high school, I was fluent in English and French. This was 35 years ago. I maintained fluency in these languages, and although I always wanted to learn a 3rd language, I didn't. Then, all of a sudden, I started learning Ukrainian precisely two years ago. I am now at the B1/B2 level in this language. In June 2023, I added Italian to the mix, half-seriously, I admit, because my focus was on Ukrainian. I intensified my effort in Italian in the last couple of weeks.

A couple of weeks ago, I enrolled in a university programme with French as my primary subject and Slavistyka as my second subject, with Ukrainian as the primary language. As I am already past the beginner level in Ukrainian, they "force" me to learn a second Slavic language, which, quite frankly, I didn't want to do just yet. But I decided to grab the bull by its horns and chose Czech. I am currently playing around on Duolingo with it.

The consequence of this unexpected twist will be that I will have to reduce my investment in Italian again because I will need all my brainpower to learn two Slavic languages simultaneously. This is complicated because I've trained my brain to the Ukrainian script, and now I want to write the Czech "u" as "у" and the "v" as "в", etc.

Welcome. Your written English is quite okay, but you need to punctuate! I know खड़ी पाई is different, but the rest of Hindi punctuation is pretty much the same.

To have talked much and read much is of more value in learning to speak and write well than to have parsed and analysed half a library.

This is a re-introduction.

I started learning German back in 2012 or so. I used the old HTLAL forum a whole lot and started using this forum when it switched over (around 2014 or so? Could be mistaken), both were pivotal for me in figuring out how to go about learning languages. I eventually took (and passed) the German B2 exam at the Goethe Institut in 2017, and also learned a bit of other languages (French, Italian, dabbled in Norwegian, Spanish, Latin and Greek). Life got in the way and I lost motivation around when Covid hit so I haven't done much since then (aside from work where I use a little German from time to time) but I recently had a work trip to the Czech Republic, learned a little bit of Czech and dusted off my German while in Frankfurt, it completely resurrected my drive for learning languages.

I've decided I want to prepare for the C1 German exam and have developed a study plan, so I'm back on the saddle again. My wife and I are also talking about taking a trip to Iceland and Norway eventually so I'll eventually add those into the mix as well. Needless to say, I'm back and I'm excited to start participating in this forum again! I don't remember my old login credentials so this is a fresh account.

I'm also interested to see if some of the older members are still here (I forget their usernames but I'll remember them if I see them).

Hi my name is Vladimir.
My native language is Russian, but I mostly think, talk and write in English.
Learning French, Portuguese and German.
I am building a free toll for working with native content, and also a course creation software specifically for creating language courses called LangMagic.
The market is small, so it is going to be a struggle. So hope to get some insights and feedback from the community.

Hello, you can call me Moon or MK, if you want. My real name isn't necessary atm ^^. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the past, but I didn't learn the language well and that kept me from forming some meaningful relationships. I want to relearn Tongan and Samoan, as I intend to visit those countries again. Learning a new language is very confusing to me, I don't really know who to go to, to really understand it, and when I think about my memories as a volunteer, my heart breaks a little knowing I could have done more.

I want to dedicate a small bit of my life to learning these languages and to also get over my grief of those lost years.
