Wiki Editing

Postby fcoulter » Sun Nov 25, 2018 4:37 pm

Editing and linking using the standard editor.

Editing
To edit a wiki page, click on the Edit button. (There are other ways to edit which I'll deal with later.)

This will open up an edit window.

Go down the article until you see what you want to change. Make your changes, then click on Save Page.

Linking
Linking varies depending if you are linking to another article in the Wiki, if you're linking to something out on the internet, or to something in Wikipedia. Start off by selecting the text you want to link from, then click on the link button.

What you do next depends on where you want the link to go.

To another article - same name
If you want to link to an article with the exact same name as the text you've linking from, just click Done.

By the way, this is also a way to create a new article. If the article does not exist in the wiki, then the link will be made, but the link will be red. Clicking on a red link will let you create a new article.

Warning: Through trial and error, it appears that Wikia's software does not handle non-English characters well in their links. You may need to replace article names like Iñupiaq with article names like Inupiaq.

To another article - different name
If you want to link to an article with a different name as the text you've linking from, you can either select the existing article from the drop down list or type in a new name.

To be continued in the comments.

It will show up as red even if the Wikipedia article exists. However, once the article is saved, it will show up as a normal internal link, without the arrow that signifies an external link.

Deleting a link

To delete a link in an article, select any of the text with the link. Then click the link button that appears directly below.

Thanks for the guide, Fcoulter! I've made this a sticky so others can easily find it and hopefully take part.

Formatting and the Navigation Box

Postby fcoulter » Fri Nov 30, 2018 2:07 pm

As you look through the Wiki, you'll notice a navigation box in most of the articles. You do not directly create this box. Instead, it is created automatically by use of format commands.

In the normal edit window, there is a dropdown box with multiple options. These options affect the entire paragraph. With your cursor in a paragraph, select one of the following options:

Paragraph: This is the format you will be using the most. This is normally the actual text of the article.

Heading: This produces the big, underlined heading seen in most articles. This heading also appears in the navigation box as the highest level of navigation.

Sub-Heading X: This produces lower and lower level headings. (The bigger the X, the lower the heading and the more indented the item is in the navigation box.) Generally the use of the lower levels won't be necessary unless the article is extremely long. (And if the article is that long, you may wish to consider breaking the article into several pieces, with links to the original article for each piece.) Additionally, it is poor form for a jump in levels. Sub-heading 1 would normally be under a Heading. Sub-heading 2 would be under Sub-heading 1. Etc.

The last two formats do not affect the navigation box.

Block Quote: This indents the paragraph. This is normally used when quoting a larger chunk of another work. (Smaller quotes are usually indicated by using quote signs.)

Pre-formatted: This puts the paragraph in a box and changes the font to courier. Generally, this is used when including computer code.
