You've been very patient. I learned a thing or two, so you didn't waste your time.

Welcome! Glad to be of use.

It's always a balance about a discussion here versus time spent ... studying or doing something else. But I'm glad the discussion was useful.
I sometimes need to limit myself or I get nothing other done! ;)

@zenmonkey

For me it's easy, because I'm learning English. So my time here is not wasted language-wise. I'm a little bit uncomfortable that I'm wasting somebody else's time. On the other hand, it's their own choice.

Regarding quoting within a new post, I have a suggestion that I think would improve the readability and usefulness of the posts. Some posts include the entirety of an earlier long post, with maybe just a very short sentence or even just a word or two, such as "I agree", even when the quoted post was the previous post in the thread. Nobody is going to read the quoted part. Needless clutter.

Suggestion (if it is technically feasible): Limit the quote to a certain size (maybe three lines). That would ensure that the quote gets edited to highlight the relevant part, or it just defaults to the first three lines.

That would make quoting more meaningful and more useful.

Yes, sorry, my previous post was a mess.
I sometimes click a wrong button.
Usually, howerver, I do quote properly, only one or two sentences.

It does seem like we need a set of guidelines in addition to rules. Avoid long quotes, don't comment in topics you consider useless, remember to point out the positives when making corrections :) ;)
This would also apply to one-liners btw (like "i agree", "great" etc)

Don't worry about my time, like you say, it's my choice.
If I need to mange it otherwise, I'll say so.

I don't think this is a useful regulation or a real technical need.
Look, if you had limited my quote to 3 lines you'd miss the I'm talking about the tech part.

OTH, I agree, it makes sense to be frugal in your quoting. But that's for each of us to manage.
If I'm on my phone, sorry, not going to edit the quote much.

BTW, can I use standard internet short hand like OTH and BTW or are we also going to limit that to circa HTLAL 2005?

I think you mean OTOH, if people are going to write the acronyms wrong then that could cause some real headaches for readers ;)

One thing that needs to be fixed is to make it so that quoting a post with a quote in it only quotes the post, not the quote in the post. It didn't do that on the old htlal right? And it seems lots of people are trying to get rid of the quote-within-a-quote but messing it up. I almost did it in this post.

I haven't seen either, but your version at least I can figure out.

Just to illustrate that one might want to use double quotes :)
