Suggestions for additions

Postby getreallanguage » Wed Jul 22, 2015 6:37 pm

As somebody already pointed out, it would be neat if there was a "vote counter" on the user information on the right of people's posts - i.e. a combined amount of how much love their posts have gotten.

Another thing I would like to suggest is a Philological room subforum :)

We have this available! Iguanamon has also suggested that we should set this up. The only catch: The current version is a bit ugly, and it would remain so until we had time to mess with the theme.

What do people think? Should we flip the switch, and live with a slightly ugly icon? I'm totally open to suggestions here.

I'm OK with ugly. When you look like me you have to be.

I'm ok with ugly, too :)

On the topic of additions, UniLang has one more brilliant thing: a tag which displays Arabic (and I think Hindi, too) text in bigger, clearer font than the rest.

The forum software on HTLAL is a bit dated, but phpBB3 is hardly state-of-the-art either. However I totally agree with the benefits of choosing a stable, open-source, well-supported and extensible solution, and phpBB does have lots of extensions that I imagine could give it the features that more modern forums offer. A few small things I'd find nice:

* A "quick reply" feature at the bottom of the topic page, so you don't have to be taken to the full reply page.
* A warning when you try to close the window/tab when you're in the middle of writing a post, to help prevent accidents.
* IF we decide to stick with this forum rather than moving back to HTLAL, I think a facelift could be in order, even if it's just another pre-made theme. HTLAL's appearance may be a bit dated, but it's unique and has its charm, while I find the default phpBB theme pretty uninspiring.

Was also going to suggest "Active topics" but that's already been done!

One thing that the original HTLAL site has that is missing here is the ability to print or view a language log in a single page.

Would that be something doable here?

I agree that it's a nice feature, and I imagine there is some way to do it. I don't know how much work would be involved.

The Unilang forum actually posts their complete source code on GitHub so that any forum member can propose "pull requests" implementing improvements. I think that's very cool, partly because I'm an open source geek, and partly because I'm very lazy and don't want to do all the code stuff myself!

This is already build into this software. At the bottom (and top) of the thread should be a little "tool / wrench / spanner" icon which has an option for "Printer view" which puts everything on to one page. Not pretty looking, but does show the entire thread on one page.

No it doesn't, it shows only the current page (10 posts from the &start=) number.
